Caller ID is your friend. I don't recognize, I don't pick up.
Although these days if I recognize it as spam I just pick up and hang up. Getting tired of the ringing.
If I was a bachelor I'd probably turn the ringer off, and let all calls go to the machine. Then once a week see if anyone left me a message.
