Besides the Supreme Court of the United States, where does a "simple majority" allow major life changing decisions?
I've been a parliamentarian for many years, and it's a common practice that the more important the decision, the greater the "majority" has to be.
Even our Congress works this way.
Many things can be "won" by "simple majority", but major issues require a "super majority" of two thirds or three quarters.
It just surprises me that MAJOR decisions can be made by a 5-4 vote.
In our Church, when we are making a major decision, and the vote is only something like 70% for, I'll often suggest, "let's step back and revisit this", because, to me, unity is crucial to the operation of a Church. MOST of our votes, because we do our homework and present issues we are pretty sure will pass with overwhelming support, are 100%.
With all the safeguards built into our country's operation by the founders (balance of power, etc.), I'm surprised that major decisions with major consequences can be made with a "simple majority".
