  • Uber sued for millions after assault of Virginia Beach girl

    Source: http://hamptonroads.com/2015/06/uber-sued-millions-after-assault-virginia-beach-girl

Ride-sharing provider Uber faces a $2 million lawsuit after authorities say a driver assaulted a teenager in Virginia Beach.

WVEC-TV reports Uber and Isagini Marin, the driver, are listed as defendants in a civil suit filed June 3 by the mother of a 13-year-old girl.

Marin pleaded guilty in April to assault and battery of the teen. He was sentenced to 6 months in jail, with time suspended on the condition of one year of good behavior.

The girl regularly used Uber in 2014 to get to and from her middle school. The lawsuit details a series of unwanted advances over multiple trips.

We spend years trying to teach our children not to get into cars with strangers, and then Uber comes along, and suddenly, it's safe?

Uber has been trying to maintain a distance from it's drivers for this reason...they're "Contractors" not employee's. So we're not responsible. They say "We're just an app/software company that connects you to willing drivers". Although the recent ruling in Calif. recently may redefine that...whatever makes them more responsible for who shows up the better...

But why on earth would a parent be ok with their 13 year old daughter getting into the car alone with a dude she does not know from Adam?

I know...right? I guess it's because people have in their head that these are employees that have been background checked and vetted...plus they drive nice new shiny cars so they must be ok...

Is this a problem happening more with Uber than with Taxis or other transportation?

It does seem there may be a difference when the riders are in the back of Taxis which have a shield between the driver and the passengers.

There was that case where a 12 year old girl wanted to run off halfway across the country to meet a boy she met online, and found a taxi driver willing to take her. I didn't realize taxis would actually take unaccompanied kids that young.

yes. interesting situation. If young children couldn't get taxi rides, they could be left stranded in a bad situation -- maybe not even anticipated by parents.

I think the parents should be arrested - or at least have a social worker check into them. Letting a 13 year old ride with a stranger by herself is completely irresponsible.

The California labor board ruled the other day that Uber drivers are employees and not independent contractors. This legal language will probably have to evolve accordingly.

Did you see the first thing from User Requirements and conduct?

                      "User Requirements and Conduct.

If you accept them to download the APP, how can the Mom then sue Uber?
