  • The Pope And Climate Change: The Left Is Going To Hate This!

    Oops!

For Pope Francis, caring about the environment goes hand in hand with taking a strong stand against abortion. "Since everything is interrelated, concern for the protection of nature is also incompatible with the justification of abortion," the encyclical says. "How can we genuinely teach the importance of concern for other vulnerable beings, however troublesome or inconvenient they may be, if we fail to protect a human embryo, even when its presence is uncomfortable and creates difficulties?"

Francis suggests that efforts to slow population growth are misguided and a distraction from the underlying cause of the world's environmental crisis—the hoarding of the Earth's resources by the rich and powerful. "To blame population growth instead of extreme and selective consumerism on the part of some, is one way of refusing to face the issues," the encyclical says.

There's plenty of liberals who oppose abortion. Unless you're just going to define a liberal or leftist as someone who supports abortion.

      Like me.
"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

The Pope's message seems like a mixed bag to me. He seems to be siding with environmentalists on global warming, while also speaking out against resource grabbing by the wealthy and consumerism. On the other hand, he strongly opposes abortion, and doesn't mind an ever-increasing population. He has things for Catholic politicians on both the Left and the Right to be nervous about.

If only Catholics had a political party in the US that they could rally around. Something liberal on fiscal issues and conservative on social issues. Just about the opposite of Libertarians.

Personally, I'm more concerned about the Pope's position on population growth than his other positions. But I like the guy. He's doing a good job of pushing the Church away from materialism and more toward social concerns.

In all the articles and opinion pieces I've seen, the left is giving a sincere thumbs up to the Pope, and then proceeding to roll on the floor laughing when climate-change denying conservatives go into apoplexy at the Pope's words.

The Pope also Rejects Gender Theory in new Encyclical:

              A Rejection Of ‘Gender Theory’

In “Laudato Si,” Francis takes time to discuss the idea of “human ecology,” which has been seen as a rejection of “gender theory” that serves as the basis for “transgender identification,” reports The Catholic News Agency. Francis says our bodies are “God’s gift” that should not be manipulated.

“The acceptance of our bodies as God’s gift is vital for welcoming and accepting the entire world as a gift from the Father and our common home, whereas thinking that we enjoy absolute power over our own bodies turns, often subtly, into thinking that we enjoy absolute power over creation.”

“Learning to accept our body, to care for it and to respect its fullest meaning, is an essential element of any genuine human ecology. Also, valuing one’s own body in its femininity or masculinity is necessary if I am going to be able to recognize myself in an encounter with someone who is different. In this way we can joyfully accept the specific gifts of another man or woman, the work of God the Creator, and find mutual enrichment. It is not a healthy attitude which would seek ‘to cancel out sexual difference because it no longer knows how to confront it.’”

You are, apparently unwittingly, reinforcing the salient point, seer.

Pope Francis' encyclical dealing with the scientific fact of climate change isn't big news just because he's the pope. The problem for the Republican party is that they have often tried to marry two patent untruths: that climate change is false (or greatly exaggerated) and that the Left has no fidelity to church doctrine (or is outright hostile to religion).

So the pope comes along and, along with saying plenty of things that have been established RCC dogma for years, forcefully acknowledges that climate change is real and that the faithful have a moral obligation to address it, especially as it impacts the poor. For a party that's supposedly all jacked-up about moral obligations of faith, that leads itself to some ... interesting statements from folks like Santorum and Jeb!

If you think the Left has long since dismissed the RCC's position on contraceptives, abortion, and sexuality, Pope Francis' reiteration of that position doesn't really affect the Left all that much, nor was it expected to. But it does put the social conservatives, who tend to be very authoritarian when it comes to church doctrine, in a bind.

It does nothing to put me in a bind. Nor most conservatives. They have thought that the Pope was half a commie for a while now. I believe that both Santorum and Bush are Catholics. I am not. But if the liberals want to use the Pope as an authority on Climate Change, they should also do it on sexual issues.

My vague perception is that liberals aren't using the Pope as an authority on the subject, they're using the opportunity to point and laugh at Catholic conservatives who do use the Pope as an authority on other subjects.

Now, if you can find Catholic liberal politicians who are cite their support of climate change as coming from the words of the Pope, while simultaneously ignoring him on sexual issues, I'd like to know who they are, so I can laugh at them too.

"The liberals" don't need to cite the pope as an authority on climate change, as they use the scientists for that.

What makes this newsworthy, aside from the encyclical ostensibly being authoritative to Santorum and Jeb! (and a good many of us remember this being a deal for Democrats such as Kerry in the past), is that there's one less haven for the denialists to seek shelter.

                        Where you gonna run to?

"Denialist" Sam? Right out of the communist manifesto. Thankfully your side is losing the PR war. The Environment consistently ranks very low on the issues that people worry most about.

"Thankfully your side is losing the PR war" ... Uh, you realize that this thread was the product of the Pope releasing an encyclical recognizing the reality of climate change and the moral requirement to address its impact, right?

I would not call that an indication of losing the PR war.

*Also just checked the text of "The Communist Manifesto" ... no mention of "denialist", or any variation of "denial."

Well since the Pope is not a scientist I can take what he says on this issue with a grain of salt.

I would, just look at the polls on what people find most troubling.

You guys are writing the new Communist Manifesto as we speak. Perhaps the next step is to send "denialists" to re-education camps. Or worse.
