Well, and those, as Paprika aptly put it, who insist on dehumanizing their enemies, by insisting that someone who they hate can't possibly ever have any virtues whatsoever and isn't allowed to be described with any descriptive words that can be considered positive, regardless of how accurate those words might be.
I don't think the offense is so much about attributing positive qualities to the 'enemy'. It's more about the lack of respect and crass attitude displayed by people who give voice to such notions, given the context. CNN should issue a public apology and fire the news anchor.

I think you guys are putting more into her words than is really there. "Courageous" and "brave" don't always carry positive connotations, and can be used negatively or neutrally.

One program I enjoyed for many years when I was young was a British political comedy called "Yes Minister". In that program, 'courageous' and 'brave' were regularly used as negative terms, meaning "political suicide if you, as a politician, take a 'courageous' or 'brave' stand on this political issue".

So while a lot of you guys seem to have jumped to the conclusion that the CNN anchor was praising the man by using those words, the assumption I made on reading the quote was that she was using the words in a negative or neutral way. I've just watched the video footage, and her inflections when she says the words do suggest a negative meaning, as does the context. She's reflecting on the fact that it was a single gunman rather than multiple people and she's saying the guy was suicidally crazy to have done this alone: Courageous and brave in a bad sense of suicidally crazy.

I live and work with people who don't give a two craps about political correctness. I'm not easily offended. But yes, I found it offensive. Perhaps there is an appropriate time to debate the character and mindset of this man, but it is NOT appropriate to speak in such a manner immediately after the attack. It shows the anchor and the network have no respect for the intended victims, and they don't even try hard to mask their hate. Comments and actions like that are why people like Ismaaiyl Brinsley get it into their head that the general public, politians, and news media support their crazy ideas.

CNN in particular spends a lot of time vilifying those in my profession, and then when an unprovoked attack is made against the police in Dallas, one of their anchors praises the attacker? I haven't seen similarly positive comments about the police. Call it a Freudian slip if you will, but right now the absence of an apology is speaking volumes about what sentiment she meant to convey.

I stand corrected. Apparently she did apologize.

I'm not sure what it means that I couldn't find her apology on their own website, but instead had to go somewhere else.

CNN should have the moral fortitude to post it on their site and say it on air.

So, the news anchor hurt feels and should therefore be fired.

Honestly, at times there's really no difference between the 'conservatives' and the liberals.

                She did.

Honestly, I think this was blown out of proportion. If all she did was substitute 'brave' for 'this took some kind of guts' without any indication of admiration, then it's probably a mistake. I don't agree with the assessment but I can see a rational argument for it. It's dumb, in my opinion, but not the kind of dumb someone should be fired for.

She apologized. Give her the benefit of the doubt and move on.

I'm not happy with her, but I'm more upset with the network. They could have handled the incident better, but obviously they don't care about offending law enforcement personnel. Good to know.

Well, it is CNN. I stopped expecting much from them a loooooong time ago.
