  • Changes in American moral views since 2001

Gallup polling data of 2001 compared to 2015 shows how Americans' views have shifted on various social issues:

Some interesting numbers there. I guess I found the support for "Doctor-assisted suicide" surprisingly high. And there's been little change on abortion views, even though it's such a contentious issue.

Whereas the biggest changes have all been with regard to views about homosexuality, and a few ideas about marriage, with them consistently getting more liberal. Although, certain aspects of the topic of marriage - such as extra-marital affairs and polygamy - remain among the most widely morally-disapproved-of things. Support for polygamy remains so low that it seems it will be unlikely to gain majority support within the next 50 years.

"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism" - George Orwell
"[Capitalism] as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evils. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy" - Albert Einstein

Some similar data on other relevant political topics:

Marijuana legalization: "Do you think the use of marijuana should be made legal, or not?"
    2001: 34% said yes.
    2015: 51% said yes.
    Change: 17 percentage points.

Government healthcare: "Do you think it is the responsibility of the federal government to make sure all Americans have healthcare coverage, or that it is not the responsibility of the federal government?"
    2001: 31% said yes.
    2015: 52% said yes.
    Change: 21 percentage points.

Yes, America is Slouching Towards Gomorrah. I'm sure you're thrilled.

I don't like the question about "having a baby outside of marriage." I don't believe it's a sin to be pregnant out of wedlock. The sin was already in the past when the conception happened. If we say the state of being pregnant is an ongoing sin, we're implicitly encouraging abortion (because the way you'd "stop sinning" is to stop being pregnant).

        Rant over.

"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

Ugh. Why do people have to mess up perfectly good Yeats?! "Slouching Towards Gomorrah" doesn't even make sense ... this is why we can't have nice poetry anymore. For shame, Robert H. Bork.

It gives you something to rant about.

I think the idea is more about the intent to conceive and raise a child out of wedlock, as some couples are doing or have done (e.g., Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie).

We must protect "The Second Coming" at all costs until the Second Coming!

(Ignoring Yeats' neopagan and fascist ideology)

Good to see you, Sam. I thought maybe you had been assimilated.

That's the goal. Got a ways to go yet.

                      It's a decent riff.

Unlike Starlight I choose God and His TRUTH over the world and it's lies. Good is Good and Evil is Evil no matter how many people try to say differently.

Lots of powerful gays about in all walks of life. Being gay/lesbian increasingly opens doors for people and conversely being Christian closes them and gets you sidelined and even into court etc etc. However our consolation is in God

I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

I think that happened sometime before he stated that in the future we will need to evangelize robots.
