How the Left is Killing Free Speech... Amen and amen. I can't imaging the push back Ms.Powers is about to get!!!!

There’s much talk about free speech, and the right to it. Now comes a new book explaining who and what is eroding this most basic tenet. Now on book shelves: “The Silencing: How the Left is Killing Free Speech” by Kirsten Powers, a lifelong liberal and daughter of a feminist who converted to Christianity as an adult and is now a frequent contributor to Fox News.

She points out that leftist methodology is to simply shut down public debate with the help of a compliant liberal news media and a secular culture — while squawking about tolerance and values.

It’s easier for the illiberal left to demonize their opponents and sanctify themselves as higher moral beings that treat differences of opinions respectfully,” Ms. Powers says, noting that the left reserves a “special strain of strident wrath” for Christians.

Illiberal feminists can’t seem to fathom that some people actually believe an unborn human matters or that abortion is harmful to women. Sometimes the mask comes off and what we see is that illiberal feminism is often driven by a base hatred of Christianity,” the author explains.

I just like it when one of their own finally realizes it! A small thing - yes, but a victory nonetheless...

It's not much of a victory considering KP has been a moderate liberal (and I mean actual moderate rather than a passive aggressive hardliner like pancreasman) for as long as I remember.
"As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths." Isaiah 3:12

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

She actually has become more moderate since her conversion to Christianity - she was pretty far left before that.

As the article points out, she's "a frequent contributor to Fox News". It's not surprising she's spouting ridiculous nonsense. That's pretty much the requirement to be on Fox regularly. (I'm serious. I wish I was saying this in jest, but sadly Fox has long exceeded anything that can be parodied.)

Hmmm, I am reminded of all the unpatriotic people during the post-9/11 years when the conservatives were into war and the liberals were not.

Is it really just one side that controls the mainstream media or a select groups of people who want to control the masses, government or otherwise?

"Nonsense! Complete nonsense I say! Liberals love free speech!" cried the liberal who is in favor of banning hate-speech and rolls his eyes at America's "absurd constitution" and "obsession" with First Amendment rights.

(~rolls eyes in the general direction of the US's absurd constitution, and the currently dominant ridiculously excessive interpretation of the first amendment free-speech rights~) I personally support the idea of hate-speech laws, and many countries in Europe have adopted them.

The original article was poorly written and didn't make much sense, and the claims it made were confused and incoherent.

So if you have any particular point you'd like to make, feel free to state your case.

Incidentally I wouldn't say "Liberals love free speech". That's too much of a generalization. I would say that ideas about "tolerance" and "freedom of speech" were very popular banner concepts fought for by liberals in the West a generation ago. I think the cultural landscape is undergoing a significant change in the transition between the baby-boomers and the millennial generation, and that neither of those things are banner concepts being fought for to the same extent by the younger generation. I think this is a result of the new generation growing up taking those values for granted: They accept those values, and take them as read, but they have other values too and those other values may at times supersede them.

So, as an example, I would personally say something like "Of course people should generally have free speech! Duh! But that right is not unlimited in scope. Excessively riding the hobby-horse of 'free-speech' in order to trample all other values that exist in the world is a bad idea. Having an optimal society is about striking an appropriate balance between various different values and concerns that we might wish to optimize: Happiness, freedom, love, privacy, wealth, knowledge, health etc"

The notion that liberals are "shutting down debate" or somesuch nonsense is a ridiculous line I see Fox News trot out regularly. It's so absurd I don't really know what to make of it. Are liberals sending the military into Fox News headquarters to kidnap everyone there, so as to silence their speech? No. Are liberals revoking their broadcasting rights so as to silence their speech? No. Are liberals passing laws to ban them from talking so as to silence their speech? No. There's literally nothing liberals are doing to silence their speech. From the volume of Fox News / Rush Limbaugh garbage filling the air waves and the internet, it should be self-evident that it definitely isn't being silenced. So claims about speech being silenced such as in the original article don't correspond to anything meaningful or true about reality.

I agree that hate-speech laws involve a certain very limited level of silencing of speech. They would certainly be found to be unconstitutional in the US by the current Supreme Court for that reason. I am not aware of any significant push by anyone to introduce hate-speech laws into the US.

"Nobody is trying to silence you" says guy who hates free speech and wants it restricted with hate speech laws on the books in most Western countries.
