Suit seeks $10 million in Henrico County, VA inmate drug death

The widow of a Henrico County jail inmate is claiming in a $10 million wrongful death suit that Henrico Sheriff Michael Wade and other jail officials covered up details surrounding her husband’s death from a drug overdose.

The 26-page suit filed May 1 alleges a broad series of shortcomings within jail security operations that she claims allowed a food service employee to bring a highly dangerous narcotic into Henrico Jail West and provide the drug to inmate Willie Wingfield Scott. Scott was serving a year and two months for violating a protective order.

Is food service there done by county employees, or by a private vendor?

If the latter, it adds a different dimension to the story. Aramark (one such vendor) is notorious for compromising security.

Contractors. I think it is either Aramark or ARC. They aren't named in the news article. I can't locate the filing yet on the county court web site.

I'll be interested to know what you find out. These private vendors are very poor about security, as I happen to know firsthand. They also don't care who gets hurt in their pursuit of maximum cash return. Most of them could stand a good lawsuit shoved in their face, followed in turn by a bankruptcy filing.

If you say yes, I'll next wonder if the sheriff or some other county official is getting kickbacks, or had certain contributors to their campaign.

A food service worker was searched and found with .77 grams of heroine and subsequently pled and got community service, although there was no direct evidence that this was the individual that gave the drugs to the deceased inmate. There are multiple "John Does" as defendants in the lawsuit who are said to have been the ones who provided the drugs.

Sounds like the FL panhandle prisons where the whole family works there!
