  • ANZAC Day 2015 "We Will Remember Them" 100 Years

100 years ago today was the start of the Gallipoli campaign which lasted from 25 April 1915 to 9 January 1916. It was the birth of ANZAC Day.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists 2,871 members of the New Zealand Armed Forces who died fighting for New Zealand between those dates. Over 16,000 died in total in WWI.

Here is a list of those 2,871 New Zealanders who died at Gallipoli, or during that period. We shall not forget them.

      Interesting, Raph.

      Thanks.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

My feelings on ANZAC day are mixed. I worry that the rather basic lesson of the history of it - "It's a bad idea to unthinkingly fight other people's battles in ill-conceived wars" - doesn't really get widely taken on board, and there can be a bit too much war-glorification.
"I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump
"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism" - George Orwell
"[Capitalism] as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evils. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy" - Albert Einstein

Er what? From what I find, it's similar to remembrance day here in Canada, not a glorification of war....

Honouring the fallen can have intentional or unintentional implications of glorifying war in general. It depends on the way in which it is done and what is said. That is why my feelings on the subject are mixed. I don't approve of war.

It is certainly a fine line to tread, one that we often go over. We over-mythologise Anzac Day a bit, but honouring those who went is still worthwhile.
