  • Blue Bell a Class Act

Many of you will be aware of the recall of Blue Bell ice cream due to some deaths and illnesses resulting from their product.

Blue Bell is headquartered in my community, and a number of their top executives attend my Church, or the Lutheran Church with whom we share our building. I know these guys.

I have been amazed with the manner in which they are handling this crisis. Initially, they recalled some products from specific production lines where the presence of listeria was detected. Last week, they made the decision to recall all products out of an abundance of caution.

To me, it's weird not to see Blue Bell trucks zipping around town, and on and off the highways around us.

What's amazing, though, is how these guys are handling this crisis - no blame game, no excuses - and, as far as I can tell - they're keeping employees on the payroll for the duration of the shutdowns, and doing everything they can to protect their company's image and prove their commitment to the safety of their customers and the livelihood of their employees.

One of the top executives had just recently retired, but was called back full time to head up the handling of this crisis. He is an outstanding Christian, and is acting accordingly.

In a world where it's so easy to slam "corporate" - here is, in my opinion, an excellent exception.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

The first outbreak was near me, and the CEO was willing to come talk with one of our local news stations that evening. I thought that was neat.

Rum is a preservative. Just keep drinking rum and you'll be fine.

My best friend in college went to high school with the son of the Blue Bell CEO. From what I know, his family is just all around awesome. They gave my friend a "Blue Bell scholarship." Basically, "we know you're paying for this yourself; here is some money to help."

Yeah, I know that guy, and he's really looking tired and worn when he's on the news -- this is really getting to him.

So, today we had a community rally in support of Blue Bell. Blue Bell is not just a local employer - they are integral to our community. They have built a first class aquatic center where kids can swim and adults can use the warm water therapy pool for ridiculously cheap annual fees, or FREE if you can't afford it. They have funded much of the football program for our High School. They constantly contribute to humanitarian causes and are consummate philanthropists. They pretty much fund our Citizens' Police Academy.

So I'm standing on the platform with Mr Kruse, who has been with Blue Bell for over 70 years, starting out as a part time stock boy, and he is explaining that "we are doing everything we can, and we're asking for help from anybody who can help - from the medical community, from biologists, from other people in our industry, from anybody who can help..." WHILE he is speaking, I get a phone call (phone was on "stun" instead of "kill", so I let it go to voice mail.) After the prayer service, I listen to the voice mail, and it was a robocall from Blue Bell advising that they have recalled all their products, and instructing how to return or get a refund or whatever. Most of us are declining the refund.

I have never seen a business so clearly accept responsibility, and work so hard to get through a crisis - again, no blame game, no finger pointing - and an absolute willingness to get help from anybody who can give it.
