  • Clinton Cash?

    Will this hurt Queen Hillary?

One example of an alleged quid pro quo cited by the Times and other sources involved the State Department’s backing of a free-trade agreement with Colombia that benefited a company founded by a big donor to the Clinton Foundation.

Hillary opposed the trade deal when running for president in 2008 because of the South American country’s poor record on workers’ rights.

But then the company, Canadian-based Pacific Rubiales, and its founder, Clinton Foundation board member Frank Giustra, donated “millions” to the foundation, The International Business Times reported.
In 2010, the State Department under Hillary lauded Colombia’s human rights record, allowing Giustra’s company to reap huge profits.

Maybe. Unlike how the media turned a blind eye to everything Barrack Obama, they seem genuinely interested in digging to the bottom of this.

            1. The level of favors-for-money Clinton does seems to be pretty high in general. This is not the first time Clinton has done this kind of thing.

            2. Several progressive media source I listen to have been complaining about this for years. The progressives hate it. The progressive wing of the Democrat base does not like Clinton for quite a number of reasons (too-corrupt, too-willing to start wars, insufficiently left-wing on economic policies, insufficiently liberal on social policies).

            3. This level of corruption is on par with most of the Republican field. While her level of corruption does look pretty high compared to other Democrats, it's not that high compared to most of the Republicans. I'm willing to grant her a certain level of clemency on the issue simply because her political opponents are doing it too: The way the US system is currently structured, the need for money from donors is a sad necessity, and it's simply unpragmatic for one side to try to run without any money from donors when the other side is getting lots.

            4. On the plus side, Clinton has openly supported a constitutional amendment for campaign finance reform to get the influence of money out of politics. (Unlike any of the Republican field)

I think a reasonable position would be the corruption involved in politics is the only true bipartisan issue.

Could you give us examples of similar things being done by Scott Walker, Rand Paul and Ted Cruz?

My post didn't express faith in the Democrats. It seems rather strange you got that out of it.

To be fair you said Democrats were less corrupt than Republicans. That seems a tad naive.

I complained that the Republicans were even more corrupt than the Democrats, which is not exactly an expression of any great faith in the Democrats in general. I find the general levels of corruption in US politics among both parties to be utterly horrifying and a massive ongoing problem with the entire US political system.

                              That seems a tad naive.
I don't quite know what to say to that... I would say that anyone who hasn't spotted that at the federal level the Republicans in general are more corrupt than the Democrats in general just hasn't been paying attention. At the federal level, the Democrats keep complaining about the influence of money in politics and keep trying to pass laws and constitutional amendments to help fix the problem, and Republicans keep blocking them. Voting on the issue tends to go almost entirely down party lines, with John McCain being one of the only Republicans to support campaign finance reform. When 100% of one party is voting to try to get rid of the money out of politics and close to 100% of the other party is voting to keep it, then the question of who likes the money more and who thinks it is benefiting their side more is pretty much answered. This is not really surprising, because on issues of economic policy, the Republicans are the party whose policies more strongly favor big-business and the mega-wealthy, so the fact that they end up getting more money from those sources than the other side does should not surprise anyone. The issue has a lot more nuances at the state level though.
