Uber is apparently moving toward using self-driving cars.

Uber is the latest company to dive into the realm of autonomous driving technology. The company announced in a blog post Monday night that it is partnering with Carnegie Mellon University to open the Uber Advanced Technologies Center in Pittsburgh.

I think I would rather trust a licensed Taxi driver than some amateur ride service.

It's been a big issue in Kansas City as well. Nobody has been raped to my knowledge, but the sense I have is that the taxi drivers are upset that they will have additional competition, and have convinced the city leaders to adopt protectionist policies to keep Uber out.

I have not, personally. However, there was a big fuss over it in The Big City just in the past few months.

They started up, the taxi drivers got up in arms, and the city decided that Uber couldn't operate there because they didn't get licensing from the city to charge people. So, Uber stopped charging people for a few weeks, to make a point, and the city then said something or other about not having the proper insurance. Now, whether this is taxi/city angst over more competition or Uber not doing due diligence, I don't know.

I guess the rape thing, or mugging, or ax murdering or whatever could occur with a taxi ride as well, even if that industry did criminal background checks on their drivers.

And it could even occur with stuff like Operation Red Nose, which is purely volunteer.

    Uber

I really don't know much about this.

Houston had an Uber driver take an intoxicated female to his apartment and rape her. He had a criminal history, about which Uber is apparently puzzled because they didn't catch that in their approval of his application. The driver was required to obtain a permit from the City of Houston, but apparently never applied.

The City of Houston has demanded that Uber file a plan of action to make their drivers comply with vehicle inspection, background check, etc, but Uber is claiming that's too time consuming and intrusive.

Does anybody have any actual experience with Uber?
