  • Conservatives can be nuts too.

Given the tiresome whining of so many threads in this area about how evil liberals are, I thought it might be timely to remind some people that SOME conservatives are head-smackingly stupid too. This of course does NOT mean all conservatives are stupid, nor does it prove anything about conservatism as a political philosophy in general.

Note: I am not in high dudgeon. In fact my dudgeon level is quite low.

Police say a man had a gun in his pocket and it discharged when he stood up. The bullet grazed the man's hand.

An Altoona newspaper reported the trigger caught on the man's pants and the gun's safety was not on.

"I noticed the gun was handed to another gentleman. He immediately concealed it in a white program, so I took pictures of the gun inside this program," Wagler said.

The man was taken to the hospital. Police haven't released his name.

It's unclear why he brought a gun into church. At this point, no charges have been filed.

Tuchman: … In the Ten Commandments, it says you can’t commit adultery…
    Jeffcoat: Right.
Tuchman: It says you need to honor your father and mother.
    Jeffcoat: Mhmm.
Tuchman: If someone didn’t honor their parents or committed adultery, would you serve them?
    Jeffcoat: Yes.
Tuchman: Well, why would you serve them but not serve someone who is gay?
Jeffcoat: It’s just a different kind of sin to me and I just don’t believe in it.

Arizona state Sen. Sylvia Allen (R) derailed a discussion on gun legislation by expressing her support for mandatory church attendance nationwide, KPHO-TV reported.

“Probably we should be debating a bill requiring every American to attend a church of their choice on Sunday to see if we can get back to having a moral rebirth,” Allen said during a Senate subcommittee meeting on Tuesday.

According to the Arizona Capitol Times, the bill in question involved allowing licensed concealed-carry weapons owners to bring their firearms into public buildings. The Tea Party senator said she did not understand the measure before offering her opinion on the country’s “moral erosion.”

And for those who hate liberal litigiousness:

Earlier this month, the Planet Fitness in Midland, Michigan canceled Yvette Cormier’s membership. Cormier had claimed to see a “man” — a transgender woman — in the locker room and had spent several days complaining to other customers about the gym’s inclusive policy allowing her to be there. Planet Fitness deemed her judgmental behavior “inappropriate and disruptive to other members,” but now Cormier is suing for over $25,000 in damages.

A Republican congressman is the target of an online backlash after claiming that Americans are not entitled to “freedom from religion.”

Last week, Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX) introduced a bill called the Preserve and Protect God in Military Oaths Act of 2015 that would force cadets at the Air Force’s Academy to say “so help me God” during their oaths.

“Our Constitution’s very First Amendment protects every individual’s freedom of religion. But our servicemen and women who protect our county [sic] with their lives are seeing that freedom under fire,” he said in a statement. “Let me be clear: Americans have the freedom of religion – but not freedom from religion.”

There are always nuts among normal people. Conservatives are the ones fighting for the normal, not the ones trying to enshrine their particular sins as public virtues in order to assuage their own guilty consciences. Plus, most of your examples are easily seen as conservatives simply using the liberal tactics that worked in the past against liberals in the present. May not always be the best at it, but it's nice to see them not going out quietly.

Come back when you can apologize without reservation and without lame rejoinders.

      And more ...

      http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/0...ushpmg00000013

An embattled state lawmaker is unrepentant after referring to a crime in Colorado last week in which a stranger stabbed an expectant mother and removed her unborn child from her womb as God punishing America for its stance on abortion.

"This is the curse of God upon America for our sin of not protecting innocent children in the womb," state Rep. Gordon Klingenschmitt (R-Colorado Springs) said on his YouTube Channel Tuesday. "Part of that curse for our rebellion against God as a nation is that our pregnant women are ripped open."

Utah Politician Trestin Meacham is fasting in protest to same sex marriage. Utah courts ruled in favor of marriage equality, but Meacham says he will not eat until the state bans same sex marriage.

“I cannot stand by and do nothing while this evil takes root in my home,” Meacham says. “It is time for the State to stop wasting time. Our so-called conservative lawmakers need to show some courage and stand against this judicial tyranny. They need to exert the will of the people.”

For less than the cost of an Apple iPad, Matt McLaughlin started a statewide legal conversation.

An attorney from Huntington Beach, McLaughlin in late February spent $200 to propose a ballot measure that authorizes the killing of gays and lesbians by “bullets to the head,” or “any other convenient method.”

McLaughlin’s “Sodomite Suppression Act” now is testing the limits of free speech and raising the question: Why can’t the state’s initiative process screen out blatantly illegal ideas?

The Legislature’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Caucus wrote a letter to the State Bar, asking for an investigation into McLaughlin’s fitness to practice law. More than 3,800 people signed a petition to State Bar President Craig Holden asking that McLaughlin lose his law license for advocating to “legalize the murder” of gays and lesbians.

The irony is thick enough to cut with a knife.
"As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths." Isaiah 3:12

Nah, only when you protest too much. Otherwise you actually do mean all the inanities you spout.

I think the main problem with conservatives in the US, at least, is simply that they believe the lies and propaganda fed to them by those who are in it to get money off them. Fox News, the Republicans, Rush Limbaugh, the Heritage Foundation, and various other scam-artists have managed to deceive and indoctrinate a truly astonishing number of people. By and large these people aren't very well educated and don't have the critical thinking skills necessary to fact-check the lies they are being fed by the various 'authorities' they listen to. They also tend to be very religious, and the scam-artists therefore utilize the idea that they are the defenders of religion and they keep the eyes of their hypnotized flock squarely focused on a certain interpretation of some religious ideas, in order to hide their own corruption.

Republican politicians seem to have found that there is zero cost to them for lying to their electorate, so they lie to their voters a constant basis, saying one thing and doing another. The right-wing media propaganda machine in the US seems to function so effectively that a lot of Republican voters really have no clue that their politicians are screwing them over while claiming to be standing up for their interests. There is no mechanism in place on the right to actually hold their own politicians accountable.

The root of the problem appears to be that Faux News is the most trusted news channel yet it actively misinforms its viewers. As a result, watching only Fox News makes you less informed than watching no news at all. The result is a lot of conservatives who think they know things and think they are basis their views on facts and information, when in fact they have simply been lied to, and the things they think they know are false.

Yes, there are indeed stupid conservatives. Have you ever seen anyone here deny that? The second one you link to was nominated for a screwball, and if it's saying what it seems to, then it deserves one. Conservatives and republicans are nominated for them, and a certain Florida republican deserves it from everything I've seen.

And he linked to PunditFact, child site of PolitiFact, the site that gave Mitt Romney Lie of the Year in 2012 for something that wasn't a lie. That's definitely a site I'm going to trust for judging the falsehoods of various news outlets.

But the liberals and other non-conservatives here don't constantly spam the Civics section with endless threads that are basically "DURR LOOK AT WHAT THESE STUPID (MEMBERS OF POLITICAL PARTY THAT I DISAGREE WITH) DID DURR." When liberals and other non-conservatives start threads here, there's generally a specific point or argument to be discussed, whereas many conservative-started threads tend to consist of only some mockery/finger-pointing.

I don't see many threads about it, true, but I see plenty of posts that overgeneralize and demonize conservatives. That's not really unusual at all.
