  • Not Happy In Gay Land?

Hopefully more such folks will speak out...

My Father Was Gay. Why I Oppose Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage

It took me decades to come to my views on same-sex “marriage” in light of my personal experiences.

From infancy, I was unwittingly identified under the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual (GLBT) umbrella. During the first 30 years of my life, I garnered many personal, social and professional experiences with my father, whom I always loved, and his partners. My father, a successful executive recruiter, taught me a strong business ethic.

    My Childhood

I was exposed to a lot of expressed sexuality in the home and subcultures. I experienced uncountable losses. Gender was supposed to be boundless; yet, I did not see my father and his partners valuing, loving and affirming women. My father’s preference for one gender (male) created an inner sense of inequality for me.

As a dependent child and teen, I was not allowed to say anything that would hurt the feelings of the adults around me. If I did, I could face ostracism or worse. During my twenties, I achieved both academic and career goals, but for a long while, I denied the impact my childhood had had and lied to protect my father and his partners.

Took me a fair way into the article to work out if it was a parody or not. Seems like it's not intended as a joke, but since the writer's nuts it comes across as one.

She had a crappy childhood? Well so did lots of people. Nothing at all that she says actually suggests that her father's sexuality itself contributed to the issue.

And Canada, is of course well known to be a land of tyranny, where no democracy exists and people's freedoms are totally gone. Or so nutty lady would have us believe.

Of course she must be nuts!

For many of us adult children of gay parents, we have come to the conclusion that same-sex marriage is more about promoting adults’ ” “desires” than about safeguarding children’s rights to know and be raised by their biological parents.
      Clearly she is insane!

When same-sex marriage passed in Canada in July 2005, parenting was immediately redefined, removing parentage from its biological origins. Canada’s gay marriage law, Bill C-38, included a provision to erase the term “natural parent” and replace it across the board with gender-neutral “legal parent” in federal law. Now, all children have “legal parents,” as defined by the state, which means parental rights have been usurped by the government.

In effect, same-sex marriage permits state powers to override the autonomy of biological parents. Necessary parental rights to teach children your beliefs, express your opinions, and practice your personal faith are infringed upon by the state when your beliefs, opinions and or faith practices are in opposition to what is taught and promoted at school. In fact, in Ontario, Canada, the Human Rights Commission regulations permeate and surround all public education.
      Yep, she must be mad!

This doesn't make sense. She might as well be comparing apples to pet rocks. Obviously same-sex marriage isn't about "safeguarding children's rights to know and be raised by their biological parents"...just like opposite-sex marriage isn't about that, since plenty of heterosexual married couples don't have children or raise children who aren't biologically theirs.

        And this part:
I did not see my father and his partners valuing, loving and affirming women. My father’s preference for one gender (male) created an inner sense of inequality for me.
So the father never showed value, love and affirmation towards her? Because if he had, that itself would've been a clear display of valuing, loving and affirming women. It seems like her father was just a bad parent, which is unfortunate, but it has nothing to inherently do with homosexuality, since there are unfortunately many heterosexual people who are bad parents.

It sounds like her father didn't even try to have a monogamous relationship at all

Does not follow. If a majority of heterosexual couples don't marry to have and raise their own biological children, that's what we call a "failure of the institution." Merely because plenty of people are using it as an alliance of convenience has no particular bearing on the broad intent of the arrangement.

So the father never showed value, love and affirmation towards her? Because if he had, that itself would've been a clear display of valuing, loving and affirming women. There's a whole lot of not-described going on. The most relevant line is this:

"In 1991, my father died of AIDS. None of my father’s partners/ex-partners are still alive."

i.e., not a single parent or parent-like figure in the 'family' cared enough about her to actually change their own self-destructive behavior. If she were being raised by her biological parents, there would have been well recognized inherent interests motivating them to maintain a minimum level of familial functionality. But she was being raised by a deviant community that sees behaving badly as a sacrament, and ended up with the early deaths that their horrifically unhealthy behavior demanded. Throwing a child into that milieu is abuse with a capital A.

Bear in mind that this not-happiness is entirely a result of the flagrant and repeated refusal to take any responsibility at all for gay actions, even at the end of life:

In The American People Kramer tells the story of several generations of Washington Jews, the Masturbovs, stand-ins for his own family, but with extraordinary twists.

… Conversely, it’s implied, had the American people been even somewhat less selfish, arrogant, ridiculous, stupid, bigoted, thieving, lying, hypocritical, marauding, pillaging, plundering, dumb and dumber, hating, hateful, murderous, mass-murderous and evil, one of recorded histories worst global catastrophes, the plague [AIDS], might never have happened as it did.
Sailer really doesn't have to say anything more:

In other words, the AIDS epidemic in Greenwich Village, Castro Street, and West Hollywood wasn’t the fault of gay men engaging in industrial scale sodomy in Greenwich Village, Castro Street, and West Hollywood, it was the fault of everybody else everywhere else.

Basically, this is a massive blood libel, but you aren’t supposed to notice that.

Lots of gay men of Kramer’s age or younger killed men they had sex with. It’s a lot of guilt to have to live with, so they make up bizarre fantasies about it being all the fault of Reagan and other normal Americans. That’s understandable, but that doesn’t mean the rest of us shouldn’t be able to call them out for their hallucinatory rage-filled fantasies.
Which are pretty much all gay politics nowadays. By the way, gays, thanks for killing Isaac Asimov!

Some interesting quotes and my comments:

"For many of us adult children of gay parents, we have come to the conclusion that same-sex marriage is more about promoting adults’ ” “desires” than about safeguarding children’s rights to know and be raised by their biological parents."

Adopted children are being deprived of their rights.

"Necessary parental rights to teach children your beliefs, express your opinions, and practice your personal faith are infringed upon by the state when your beliefs, opinions and or faith practices are in opposition to what is taught and promoted at school."

If a parent believes the world is flat, their rights are violated in geography and earth science classes.

"For example, if you teach your children that same-sex sexual relationships are wrong and that every child has a father and a mother, and that only man-woman sex in marriage is allowed, you run the risk of thought police questioning your beliefs, especially if your children discuss these subjects in the classroom."

                    Criticism = thought police.

"Also, children are deprived of knowing and being raised by both their biological father and mother since same-sex marriage allows for children to have same-sex parents where at least one parent is unrelated to the child."

                    Adopted children are deprived.

As I suspected, the article is terrible. Also as I suspected, people who support a non-evidence based policy will rally behind any argument in their favor regardless of quality.

No more than the anecdotes of all the monogamous gays people here claim to know.

One of my best friends, after her parents divorced, was a bit shocked when her mum subsequently entered a same-sex relationship. That was in an era when same-sex relationships just weren't widely known. So my friend took a little bit of time to come to terms with it, simply because she had to mentally process what "it" was. Decades later, her mum and partner are still together, and my friend speaks positively about them to me regularly. My friend is now a zealous advocate of gay rights.

For a famous clip of a boy raised by lesbians speaking about his experiences, I suggest this video.

Dozens of large scale studies have found that children raised by same-sex parents are every bit as successful and normal as children raised by opposite-sex parents. In fact, there is a small effect in the other direction: Same sex parents make slightly better parents on average, presumably because they can't have a child by accident, and so any child born to them comes at a time of their choosing - when they are financially ready to support a child and emotionally wanting one and feel they have the time to spend raising one. Whereas most of us can think of some examples of heterosexual families where we could have wished for some better condom usage and feel that they drag down the average quality of parenting due to their poor parenting of children they probably had by accident.

The article in the original post, apart from being a bit incoherent and rambling, I also judge to also be an outright lie, in the sense that readers of the original article would get the impression - I believe a deliberate one - that this woman was raised by her father and his ever-changing partners, rather than by her biological parents. That is what is implied by her positioning herself as a person speaking out for those who have been raised by gay parents. That is what is implied by all the conspiracy theory ramblings about how important it is that children are raised by biological parents and how the evil Canadian State is stealing all those parental rights etc. So I believe it would come as an extreme surprise to most readers of the article to realize that she was raised by her biological parents. Both her biological mum and biological father lived with her in the house where she was raised. She omits all mention of her mother from the article, I have to presume this is deliberate in order to mislead the audience into thinking that she was raised by her father and his partners. She was not a child raised by same-sex parents, she was a child raised by biological parents.
