  • Rolling Stone Retracts Article on Rape at University of Virginia

    Source: The New York Times

Rolling Stone magazine retracted its article about a brutal gang rape at a University of Virginia fraternity after the release of a report on Sunday that concluded the widely discredited article was the result of failures at every stage of the editing process.

The report, published by the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and commissioned by Rolling Stone, said the magazine failed to engage in “basic, even routine journalistic practice” to verify details of the ordeal that the magazine’s source, identified only as Jackie, described to the article’s author, Sabrina Rubin Erdely.

On Sunday, Ms. Erdely, in her first extensive comments since the story was cast into doubt, apologized to Rolling Stone’s readers, her colleagues and “any victims of sexual assault who may feel fearful as a result of my article.”

In an interview discussing Columbia’s findings, Jann S. Wenner, the publisher of Rolling Stone, acknowledged the story’s flaws but said it represented an isolated and unusual episode. The problems with the article started with its source, Mr. Wenner said. He described her as “a really expert fabulist storyteller” who managed to manipulate the magazine’s editorial process. When asked to clarify, he said that he was not trying to blame Jackie, “but obviously there is something here that is untruthful, and something sits at her doorstep.”

The Columbia report cataloged a series of errors at Rolling Stone, finding that the magazine could have avoided trouble with the story if certain basic “reporting pathways” had been followed. Written by Steve Coll, the Columbia journalism school’s dean; Sheila Coronel, the dean of academic affairs; and Derek Kravitz, a postgraduate research scholar at the university, the report, at nearly 13,000 words, is longer than the 9,000-word article, “A Rape on Campus.”

After its publication last November, the article stoked a national conversation about sexual assault on college campuses and roiled the university.

The police in Charlottesville, Va., said last month they had “exhausted all investigative leads” and found “no substantive basis” to support the article’s depiction of the assault. Jackie did not cooperate with the police and declined to be interviewed for the Columbia report. She also declined, through her lawyer, to be interviewed for this article. She is no longer in touch with some of the advocates who first brought her to the attention of Rolling Stone, said Emily Renda, a rape survivor working on sexual assault issues at the University of Virginia.

Mr. Wenner said that Ms. Erdely would continue to write for Rolling Stone, and that Will Dana, the magazine’s managing editor, and the editor of the article, Sean Woods, would keep their jobs.

It's good to know that a popular national magazine can defame an entire college campus and there will be no consequences for those involved. There is more at the link if you are inclined to read the rest of it.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." ― C.S. Used to be that this sort of thing was a career-ender for a journalist. These days, people just shrug and move on.

Sabrina, your little friends are wrong. …

Yes, Sabrina, there is a Haven Monahan. He exists as certainly as hate and privilege and patriarchy exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its purpose: to destroy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Haven Monahan! It would be as dreary as if there were no Sabrinas. There would be no politically correct dogma then, no hoaxes, no slander to make tolerable this existence. We should have no blood libels nor ensuing pogroms, no nights of broken glass.

Not believe in Haven Monahan! You might as well not believe in transgenderism! You might get your Papa Jan to hire interns to watch in all the fraternities during Rush Week to catch Haven Monahan, but even if they did not see Haven Monahan coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Haven Monahan, but that is no sign that there is no Haven Monahan. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see Tawana Brawley being gangraped by white policemen? Of course not, but that’s no proof that Crystal Magnum wasn’t right. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the gangrapes there are unseen and unseeable in the world….

Is it all real? Ah, Sabrina, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Haven Monahan! Thank God he lives and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Sabrina, nay 10 times 10 thousand years from now, he will continue to make tingle the hamster of womanhood.

Dick Wolf probably knows the guy personally.

(I actually did know a Monahan in the Army, hands down the best soldier and leader I ever saw, left to join Special Forces at the earliest opportunity.)

The girl is either just an outright liar, or she suffers from some sort of borderline personality disorder, where she makes up stuff to get attention and sympathy, and it backfired on her when the story went national.

This is has been the narrative from the left for a while. Rampant rape on University campus. But think about it - who would be doing the raping? Well yes, the boys that were schooled largely in government schools. The liberal controlled education system. So are the liberals pumping out rapists? Has their moral relativism just come home to roost? Or is it all just BS?

Knowing how liberals think, the reporter no doubt feels that she told the "right" story even if the facts were wrong. Remember, as far as a liberal is concerned, the only thing that matters is the seriousness of the accusation. Whether or not it's true is immaterial.

there are conservatives that think that way too though. I saw a fake article about how the KKK made a black baker make a cake for them. It was published on a lot of conservative news and blog sites, but it was completely phoney and not many people researched it. When it was pointed out to some of them they used the excuse well the story might be fake but the point was valid.

I'm not sure that's exactly the same thing since the liberal line is usually that even if the particular story is fake, it still describes something that happens all the time as opposed to bringing up a good point.

Not saying it's right, just not sure it's totally analogous.

From what people are saying, it seems Phi Kappa Psi will be filing a lawsuit against Rolling Stone. I guess there will be consequences after all. Good for them.
