I see some folks mentioning Colmes. :banghead: He was hired as a punching bag for Hannity, deliberate chosen as someone Hannity could beat up. He was, quite literally, a comedian before they brought him in on FOX. Nobody on the left respects him, either.
Poor Colmes. That dude can't seem to catch a break with anyone.

In one of Al Franken's books, he would write Alan Colmes' name in a tiny font to emphasize the punching back aspect.

I called into his show once back ~11-12 years ago and got on the air. I have no recollection of what I said.

Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

Dang. Now I kinda feel bad for him. You got on? I have never been so lucky to get on the air anywhere. That is pretty cool.

Yeah. They took a loan illegally from the Boys and Girls Club. That they could never pay back.

I listened to Air America. I actually found Franken to be the most listenable to of the bunch. For the rest, you could just feel the anger coming through the air waves. I mean you can accuse Rush of many things but I've never heard him angry like the Air America hosts were on a daily basis.

I guess Jon Stewart (Daily Show), John Oliver (Last Week Tonight), Bill Maher (Real Time), Rachel Maddow (Rachel Maddow Show), Chris Hayes (All In) etc for TV. Not much for radio (unless you count NPR?). The Young Turks for the internet.

Liberals, for the most part, aren't used to having everything challenged when they say it. They're used to reciting their talking points and having reporters nod and accept it. So when they went to talk radio they, for the most part, were fully unprepared to repeatedly have to defend their position which the callers would make them do and this causes few listeners to bother tuning them in.

As for Colmes being a comedian. Two words. Al Franken. No, now make that three words. Senator Al Franken. Although that's in many ways funnier than he ever was as a comedian.

Good points. You came up with this yourself?

One thing I've noticed in my many years of listening to right-wing talk shows is that they are, almost invariably, centered around advertising — often for products and services one would normally consider unnecessary or outright junk. Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck all have structured their segments in something like Morse code ... a long bit, followed by two or three short bits (often a back-from-commercial -> Single paragraph -> back-to-commercial spot) with lots of advertising in between. And that's because consumers of right-wing media tend to be older and tend to be more susceptible to this type of advertising (and scams but that's probably too far down the rabbit hole).

I listen to left-wing talk shows far less frequently, as I find them mostly on the same level as right-wing talk radio and more unnecessary in understanding daily politics. But left-wing shows, to my knowledge, are far less interrupted with advertising, most likely as a function of liberalism skewing younger and young people being less susceptible to that sort of advertising. The quality range is probably the same (Ed Schultz is as unbearable as Rush, Slate podcasts are about as reasonable as Jason Lewis) but the audience is far less monolithic and younger, and less willing to buy the advertised products.

The endless stream of advertisements on music radio stations would suggest otherwise.

You do bring up an important point though. Conservatives view most things as business, including ideological propaganda, whereas liberals view it as a holy crusade. That means conservatives who make money will be promoted whereas liberals will promote whoever tickles their ears with no regard to whether anybody else wants to listen to them (including other liberals). It's why Jon Stewart, with Teen Wolf level ratings is so famous despite the fairly small audience of people who actually watch his show.

As the resident younger liberal left-wing show watcher here, I would point out that I use ad-blocking in my internet browser and all TV I watch comes over the internet with ads pre-removed, so I see/hear literally zero ads ever in any content I consume. Over the last few years I've gotten so used to never seeing/hearing ads that now when I do see/hear them (eg if a friend is listening to radio and an ad comes on) it is a serious novelty for me. (But I consequently have no clue how much advertising is present in the original version of left-wing shows)
