  • Youth Suicide And Religion

Interesting, so family togetherness and religion help curb youth suicide. No poop Sherlock...

Some factors were associated with a lower risk of suicide ideation in this age group. Those who attended religious services or activities once a week or more (60.4% of sample) were half as likely to have considered suicide (OR=0.5). Even among those who had experienced an episode of depressive symptoms (two or more weeks of feeling sad or hopeless to the point where it interfered with their usual activities) in the previous year (20.8% of the sample), religious involvement was still protective (OR=0.6). Family togetherness was also associated with a protective effect students who ate a meal with their family five or more days in a typical week (61.1% of respondents) were half as likely to consider suicide (OR=0.5). Students who had experienced an episode of depressive symptoms in the past year also benefited from family mealtimes, as they were still less likely to have considered suicide in the past year (OR=0.7).

Family togetherness alone would lower the risk, even more so than religion, so belief in God is not necessarily a factor. Religion is, of course, another source of community and togetherness, which is a comfort to people as well, even if they know nothing of the religion itself, so this study is about the comfort that being part of a community brings, not about religion per se, which is what I think you seem to be implying.

No Jim, it is about both religion and community. After all Jim, if a man believes in God and the afterlife he has hope and purpose. Atheism is completely void of hope, and offers only death and dust.

The study says that religious involvement is beneficial, not religion alone.

          This part is religion alone.

Um, the text you quoted specifically mentions services and activities.

Services and activities have a social aspect. While it may be that religion prevents suicide, that is not what the study says. The study says that social interaction prevents suicide. A study concluding that religion prevents suicide would have to control for social interaction.

Family togetherness was associated with an even lower risk for suicide than was religion seer, 61.1% to 60.4%, so the study has nothing to do with religion per se, it's about the beneficial effects of community, whatever the source.

Of course it does. Sure community is part of it but it is religious involvement that is key:

Nonsense, the study points directly to religious services and activities. Do secular activities have the same success rate?

To my knowledge no study has examined similar secular activities. Also to my knowledge, social isolation or immediate hopelessness are the reasons why people commit suicide. Religious activities fit the bill, but not because they are religious.

If you want to involve religion, then we can bring in the incredibly low suicide rate of countries with a high Muslim population. I guess Islam offers people more hope and purpose than Christianity.

Yet religion can offer a hope that secular institutions can not. The idea of a loving Creator, that loves you. Inherent human worth. An ultimate purpose for life. And an afterlife. Of course these ideals play a role.

That may be so (I disagree), but it is not the conclusion of the study.

No Homer, I'm pointing out why religious belief is inherently superior to atheism when it comes to hope and purpose.
