  • Where Is The Outrage?

It seems like these black men kidnapped Officer Quick and murdered him as apart of a gang initiation. Where are the protests and demonstrations?

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/...0da_story.html

Police made another arrest Sunday in the disappearance and death of a missing reserve police officer from a small town in Virginia.

Anthony L. White, 22, of Mineral, Va., was taken into custody without incident in Louisa County and charged with one felony count of gang participation, according to Virginia State Police.

He is the sixth suspect charged in the case of Kevin Wayne Quick, 45, of Rockfish, Va., who went missing a week ago and whose remains were found Thursday in a remote area in Goochland County, about halfway between Richmond and Charlottesville. Police confirmed that the remains were Quick’s late Friday evening, but have not yet released the cause of death.

On Friday, police charged three others with a felony count of gang participation and what police called a charge of “principle in second degree to the crime of murder.”

That is truly, truly despicable. Make no mistake about it. That said...

    1) Where in the article does it actually say that the suspects are black?

    2) I get the sense that you don't understand the psychology of recent protesters. From what I've been told, it's this: many black people believe that if probable cause is found for these supposedly black suspects, the authorities won't hesitate to put them on trial and throw them in prison. However, they also believe that probable cause did exist in the cases of the Brown and Garner deaths, and yet the officers who killed them didn't even receive an indictment. Temporarily setting aside the issue of whether the rulings were correct, this psychology seems understandable--if you notice that the killers of people who look like you seem to consistently be allowed to walk free, while the killers of people who don't look like you seem to always be put through the justice system, you may feel that the system is deeply flawed and skewed against you.

Furthermore, the police are supposed to constitute a system that serves the community and protects it against criminals. So when a police officer is killed by a criminal, people see this as a tragic instance of failure or incompetence on the part of the system. Same applies for civilians being killed by criminals--we express our condolences and lament that the police weren't able to protect them or prevent the crime. But when a police officer kills a member of the community, that's seen as an alarming instance of the system betraying those whom it was meant to protect. With you and I, the height of our worry concerning the police is that they may not be able to do enough to help us. But many African-American folks have been led to believe that they have to worry about the possibility that the police will not only fail to help them, but also harm them. They fear that they can't trust the people who are supposed to help them, and if the protective authorities can't be counted on, then who can?

Keep in mind, I'm not making a definitive argument here, but rather just explaining a group's psychology. It is a terrifying experience to believe that a system is skewed against you, and that the people who are supposed to protect you could betray you by harming you. I believe we have a duty to our fellow human beings to carefully examine these things. If we're led to believe that there's a convincing case that their fears are unfounded, it's our duty to kindly show this to them and assuage their worries. On the other hand, if we're led to believe that their fears are warranted, then it's our job to do something to chastise and correct the system.

It is very sad that someone is killed violently. I, as a liberal (and human being) am outraged. There, I hope that eases your pain Seer.

This is what your life has been reduced to--combing the web for examples of inverse racism and subsequent paucity of outrage. Seer, get a life.

With rare respect Seer, I honestly believe you would do well to find something positive. You keep defining yourself by what you're against. I'd love to see you post some things you think are great. Maybe I'll start a thread in Civics for positive stories. Perhaps you could join me there.

It's not inverse racism, it's just run of the mill racism.

Don't you have a gang rape story to fabricate?

I'm too old to get outraged. About the only time I come close to it is when I get stuck behind a slow moving vehicle on a two lane road (lots of two lane roads in my area with curves and hills where you can't pass) and I can tell they're TEXTING WHILE DRIVING! I don't know why, but that's at the top of my list for outrage.
