  • Sex conference ‘skirting edge of what’s legal’

    Source: KOIN 6 News

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Bruce McCain, an attorney and former captain with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, said he thinks a longtime sexuality conference for teens could be setting kids up for criminal activity.

A KOIN 6 News investigation into the annual Adolescent Sexuality Conference gave attendees — including middle and high school students — pamphlets about phone sex, cyber sex, erotic text messaging and taking photos of each other’s favorite body parts.

An audio recorded by an attendee and provided to KOIN 6 News revealed the keynote speaker at the April conference in Seaside talked about masturbating over Skype.

McCain said that suggestion is a disaster waiting to happen.

“As soon as they start to capture, possess, control and transmit images of themselves underage, now you’ve got some big legal problems,” he said. “In Oregon all you have to do is to possess or control an image of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct and that becomes a crime.”

This is a quick way for a minor to become a registered sex offender for life, he told KOIN 6 News.

McCain, who is also the chair of the Reynolds School Board, said he was relieved when he learned they had not sent any students to the conference.

“We won’t in the future,” he said. “I mean this story pretty much, I would hope kind of killed that conference, but I don’t see any school district knowingly sending their kids to that anymore.”

McCain said the real problem is teaching kids to break the law.

“Even if this conference is skirting the edge of what’s legal in Oregon, they very well could be setting these kids up to actually commit child pornography cases,” he said, “particularly when it comes to the Internet sex, the Skyping, the images.”

The Clatsop County sheriff wants to shut the conference down because he, too, believes there is illegal activity taking place at the event.

The city of Seaside is reviewing their contract with the conference organizers.

It's a big story out here right now. Glad to see our local news is doing good investigative reporting.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." ― C.S. If that's what's happening, then it is completely ridiculous and inappropriate. Who is the organisation behind such nonsense?

As far as I can tell it's sponsored by the Oregon Health Authority, the state's Department of Education, Department of Human Services, and the Oregon Attorney General's Sexual Assault Task Force. Whew...
