  • Why Are Liberals So Cheap?

This might explain why liberals are so into having the government help the poor with other people's money because they are so cheap themselves.

In an even starker finding, the study shows that the religious and conservative states are the most generous givers. Seventeen of the most generous states, in relative terms, voted for Romney in 2012, while 15 of the 17 least generous ones picked Obama for re-election.

This may expose a correlation between conservative voters believing that redistribution is something that should be done out of their own pocket, not by the government.

It may also highlight links between religious belief – more common among Republican voters – and charity donations, which are funnelled towards, and encouraged by the Church.

Not coincidentally, the most generous state is Utah (with a giving rate of 6.56 percent), which is dominated by Mormons, who have to give a tenth of their income to their church. On the other side of the scale is New Hampshire, where less than a third of the people say they believe in God, and which donates 1.74 percent of its incomes to charity.

Similarly, the cosmopolitan, urbane San Francisco and Boston are at the bottom of a similar ranking for cities, while the Southern and Central strongholds of Salt, Lake City, Birmingham, Memphis, Nashville and Atlanta are among some of the most generous.

"States are X" studies border on worthless.

Conservatives think that we should help people out of our own pockets. Unfortunately liberals think that also and think they should help people out of conservatives pockets too.

It's amazing how rich liberals say that the rich don't ever pay enough in taxes never seem to take advantage of this opportunity and pay what they think is their fair share. Instead they generally seek out every deduction that their lawyers can find so as to pay as little as possible.

Remember how Warren Buffet famously complained that he was paying a lower rate than his secretary? Aside from obfuscating things by deliberately confusing tax rates on capital gains and income it turned out that Buffet has actually done everything possible to avoid paying taxes that he actually owes.

For instance, his own company, Berkshire Hathaway[1], is doing everything it can to avoid paying taxes and actually owes nearly a Billion dollars in back taxes dating back to 2002. Another one of his companies was involved in a 14-year fight with the IRS over a dividend-received deduction that was finally settled in 2005. And he is also deeply involved in the purchase of Tim Horton's by Burger King so that the latter can move its offices to Canada in order to pay far less in taxes.

Liberals are increasingly notorious for showing their generosity by giving away other people's money while holding tightly on to their own. And if they're a politician they cheerfully raise tax rates never intending to pay them (see Charlie Rangel, Tom Daschle and Timothy Geithner as a short list of examples).

              1. Which Buffet is the principle shareholder of (32.4%) as well as its chairman, president and CEO.

I'm always still in trouble again

Too simplistic, seer. Intelligent liberals think that the tax code should encourage charitable giving so that the government need not be saddled as much with social services that are addressed more effectively and efficiently by local organizations. If you go back 50 years, you would find liberals espousing 'small is beautiful' sentiments and individual responsibility for the common good. Somewhere along the way, liberals became enamored with federal solutions to issues, perhaps because of civil rights not being effectively addressed locally and opposition to some preoccupations of the federal government, eg, Vietnam and the military industrial complex. But opposition to the war in Vietnam should not have implied that the federal government would be more effective in a war on poverty (or drugs or personal immorality). Taxes area never as effective in solving a problem as the opportunity to avoid taxes by addressing a problem more directly. We would be much better off if we brought back a more graduated tax code and offered intelligent tax exemptions for genuine contributions to the common good. Likewise, there's nothing wrong with the government investing in people if we are honestly attempting to measure a return on our investment. I would combine genuinely liberal values with hard-nosed conservative economics.
