I'm still waiting for someone to explain, but you're probably right about their interpretation. I don't think my views on race are inherently/necessarily liberal, and I certainly don't know if certain liberal policies will ultimately work, but it bothers me when the common conservative response is (apparently) to deny that racism and sexism exist. Even if they were actually closer to the truth, it seems that it's far less dangerous to see those things where they don't exist than to not see then where they do exist. If nothing else, that should be an incentive to at least consider the possibility that they might exist in certain areas.
