  • Officers self-identifying?

Some of you may have seen last night's viral video of the police officer waving his gun at protestors and threatening to shoot them. What I'm interested in here is the part where somebody asks the officer for his name and the officer answers "Go (expletive) yourself." I know it's common lore, but is an officer actually required to give his name when asked?

(Incidentally, the Internet has figured out his identity, so I imagine he will be taking some time off.)

Some states mandate it via their laws while other municipalities enforce it via policy, but as far as I can tell, Missouri does not have it as a matter of law that officers have to give their name and badge number when asked. However, if someone is arrested in Missouri, they can call the arresting municipality's control center line and get the information as a matter of the Freedom of Information Act.

The officer was out of line, but those were not "peaceful protestors" as the news reports. They were instigators. They were trying to get reactions from the police and succeeded with this officer. I don't think I would be pushing toward an armed and agitated police officer, yelling at him and mocking him if I were a peaceful protestor.

Haven't seen the video, but it sounds like a cluster.

As far as the identification -- we're required to by policy (with a few exceptions).
"If you believe, take the first step, it leads to Jesus Christ. If you don't believe, take the first step all the same, for you are bidden to take it. No one wants to know about your faith or unbelief, your orders are to perform the act of obedience on the spot. Then you will find yourself in the situation where faith becomes possible and where faith exists in the true sense of the word." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

A pity he couldn't have done it while arresting the jerk...

it wasn't one guy. It was a mob with cameras pushing toward him, mocking him, etc. The officer actually looks kind of scared and he might have just been tossing out some bravado to try to keep the mob at bay, but it was like throwing chum at sharks. We also don't see what the mob was doing before the clip starts, which could have a lot to do with the context. If they were threatening him, and he pulled out the rifle and said "get back or I will ** kill you" - it would be understandable.

I would post the video but it contains the f-bomb.

What crime was committed? I didn't see anything in the video but perhaps something happened before it started? Just provoking during a protest isn't without the realm of free speech...

disturbing the peace. It was hardly a peaceful protest.

A sparse crowd was walking past him with their arms raised and he not only escalated the situation, but he threatened to kill non-violent people. I know you said he was out of line, but you still seem to be justifying his actions.

No, his reaction was not professional. I was saying he looked scared and his reaction could have been because of that, and we don't know what was going on before the camera was on. And the crowd looks pretty large to me. And the guys with the camera were egging him on, mocking him, and so on. That doesn't seem very peaceful to me. You don't usually egg on someone who has a gun in their hand. These guys were trying to get a reaction so they could post it on youtube. Plain and simple. and they got what they wanted. The officer should not have reacted the way he did though.

I reserve all judgment till I find out who videotapes the videotapers.
