Do you think it would be sinful to kill and endangered species if nature deemed it no longer viable? I personally think things that nature want extinct should be left to go extinct. And I mean natural extinction. Not hunting and killing a species too extinction :).

While you are pretty much correct, (males will hunt on occasion) the males still eat a good share of the kills, and usually first. So if you take out a male, you lower the food needs of the whole pride. In addition, you also slow down the rate of reproduction.

I think you can but it requires a permit, and is mostly a case by case basis. You cannot hunt them from an airplane.

I think there should be a bounty on wild hogs, like we used to have on coyotes.... used to be $5.00 per pair of ears turned it.

WOW, Texas Sportsman Association pays a $10 bounty on coyotes in ADDITION to whatever the County pays!

That would be great! We (of course) eat 'em! Take them to Fischers meat market in Muenster TX and have 'em made into german sausage!

When I was a young'un we used to shoot prairie dogs on my grand uncle's farm in South Dakota. The state paid a 2¢/tail bounty. Basically enough to pay for the .22 bullets if you were a decent shot.

I remember watching a show on PBS called something like "Ancient Enemies" about the conflict between hyenas and lions in Africa. A band of hyenas, led by a new inexperienced matriarch, had been severely hassling a small group of female lions. That was until the head of the pride, whose name translated into something like "Answers With Fire," came charging in from the distance targeting the hyena leader. After chasing her down he broke her back with one sweep of a paw.

Losing a male also means that most of the cubs will be lost - a new male will usually kill the cubs. The longer a male stays at the head of a pride, the more cubs that have a chance to survive.

Speaking as a former South African......

Here is the thing. This is Africa. If the Wildlife isn't profitable, then it will soon be gone.

What I mean by that is if the are no legal ways to make money off the wildlife, it's going to get killed by all the poachers, and there won't be money spent on keeping the animals safe. Properly managed (elderly/sick/cull etc), the death of one lion/elephant*/rhino at the hands of a trophy hunter, is able to pay for the protection of the a whole lot. It's not ideal, but it is Africa.

Elephants are a little harder, when they have to do Elephant culling in the Kruger Park, they have to cull an entire herd, not just one or two animals. This is because of the social bonds within the herd. A friend of my folks used to be in charge of that, he personally has probably had to kill more elephants than anyone else in the last 50 years......he hated his job. But the culling is necessary because you can't just dump a herd into a new territory, and the Kruger can only support so many elephants.

Just a note: many prides won't have a single male. They will often have brothers, or a group of males that banded together after they were exiled from their parent prides when reaching adulthood.

They nearly always kill any cubs when they take over a pride since the females apparently can't reproduce while caring for them.
