It's been the name since 1933. Native Americans have been complaining about it, but they've lacked the political influence to do anything significant. They're one of the most underrepresented groups in the nation, after all. So this isn't something new; it's just that their voices are just now being loudly heard. After winning the Super Bowl in 1992, the team had mostly been irrelevant for twenty years. Social attitudes were changing during that time, but the people who did have political influence and could've helped the cause simply didn't pay attention to the issue. But then in 2012 the franchise drafted one of the most hyped players in the game, which catapulted the team back into the national spotlight. Naturally, that re-ignited the conversation about the name.

No, because it has never been intended as a slur. I suppose you would want the British to stop calling cigarettes "fags" because certain Americans are offended by it?

It's been the name since 1933.
And it was so named to honor their NATIVE AMERICAN coach.

More nonsense PM. First, the fact is, most students or parents would not even know the faith, or lack of faith, of the teacher. I never did, unless I saw them in Church. There is no need for it to come up. And yes, have the male teachers wear a jacket and tie, and the women teachers wear conservative dresses or pants suits. None of that would be disruptive, and you know it. Where the cross dressing teacher would be - by your own admission.
Okay, I get your point. In the article the teacher was wearing capri pants and within the dress code, so there was more leeway there. In that case I can imagine the teachers had a wider range of ways to express themselves through their clothing. I do think conservative wear is preferable. I can't really come up with a better point, so while I don't think you are correct, I can't articulate why, and I'm going to have to rescind my argument.

BTW you go off on a 'white privilege' rant. A few of my ancestors were American Indians, so why should I get 'offended' over some team that has had that name over 50 years before I was born?

From what I could find; 1933. 81 years so far and because somebody got offended, they got all upset.

Fact is many native Americans have come out in support of the name. The objectors are another loud minority steam rolling all of their group (in this case American Indians).

But Jed, if 1 person out of 99 gets offended, than those 99 people need to shut up and change their ways. Isn't that how it works these days?

But isn't that one of the very points that's being disputed? Even if it wasn't intended as a slur, someone who believes that it *is* a slur has a PERFECTLY legitimate reason to feel offended.

Good God. Even if you don't think these issues are worth those groups taking offense over, you can't even acknowledge their discontent? You have to put scare quotes around "offended," as if they weren't really offended?

You misrepresented the argument yet again. I think it's due time that you received the Sparko treatment. I'm not going to bother responding to you in debate threads anymore.

Really? Are there entire tribes coming forward and advocating against the name change?

Sweety, do you have a hard time with basic reading comprehension? I find the only people who get 'offended' over things are those who look for excuses to get offended vs those who actually have some humor and a decent view of themselves. Should I get 'offended' over blonde jokes? How about over white jokes? Should I get offended over some stereotype in a movie over a blonde women? No. Why should I get offended when a white blonde is stereotypically shown as being ditzy and stupid? Because I'm a grown up that doesn't look for excuses to get offended. Perhaps they should try doing that themselves instead of looking for excuses to get offended or should I take their advice and sue others over stereotypical portrayals of blonde women?

Ouch, like I should care what a little cry baby, who whines for the sake of whining, has to say or believe. Sorry sweety, you're not that important and when you learn to read perhaps you'll come back and try this again. Don't worry though, I'm sure you'll keep looking for excuses to get offended because you have no sense of humor and seem to have a very low opinion of yourself. Are you really so thin skinned that you get offended over everything? What a sad life you must live...

*Thinking* it is a slur is not a legitimate reason to claim that it actually is. And their perceived "offense" is no reason to silence the other party. Honestly, they have not given any indications of WHY they think it is offensive, just that they are offended.

Walt “Red Hawk” Brown, chief of Virginia’s Cheroenhaka Nottoway Tribe, says he embraces Native American symbols and words being incorporated into this country’s social fabric and doesn’t find the term “Redskins” offensive.

When some body hurts you they take power over you, if you don't forgive them then they keeps the power. Forgive him baby and after you forgive him, forgive yourself.

When people get offended, they allow another person to have power over them, and they become a victim. And they remain a victim. Get over it. Forgive and live.

While I agree, I don't find this answer very satisfactory. We don't ever tell a victim of any crime to forgive and move on with no further action taken towards the perpetrator. To suggest that people should just roll over and take abuse of any sort (including verbal) seems to implicitly condone the actions of the offender.

FWIW, I happen to agree that the patent office should have stayed out of it.
