Want to argue about politics? Healthcare reform? Taxes? Governments? You've come to the right place!

Try to keep it civil though. The rules still apply here.

Do they just hire just any loser off the streets to work in these nursing homes?

I'm happy my retired sister was able to care for my mother when she was suffering from Alzheimers.

Bad apples are going to slip through the cracks everywhere, but there are some jobs that certainly need to take extra precautions (nursing homes, teaching, police, etc.)
"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

Nursing home jobs are some of the toughest jobs to fill, so the standards for hiring are often extremely low. One of our local nursing home administrators got fired because she would, indeed, do the required background check, but she never opened the envelope containing the results. She simply didn't want to know.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

My daughter worked in a nursing home for about a year and had to quit because of the wear and tear on her back, having to lift and/or move patients who were bedridden. And she said they really didn't pay enough for all the demands of the job.

EGGzackly -- so they end up with the least skilled workers being those in direct contact with the patient.

One of my church members sued a local nursing home for abuse, because her mother (under their care) constantly had bed sores and was frequently "soiled" and not cleaned up. They hid a small baby monitor camera in her room, and ended up showing that her mother was frequently yelled at and even slapped on a couple of occasions for crying.

She won 2.5 million dollars in the settlement. And, yes, she tithed.
