  • Why Must They Try And Control Everything?

Why would they even get involved. It is not the governments business...

Elementary school student Gwendolyn Williams is definitely not the typical face of childhood obesity, but the New York City Department of Education allegedly thinks the child is overweight.

Mother Laura Bruji Williams claims her daughter brought home a letter from school, describing the 4-foot-1-inch, 66-pound third-grader as overweight, because she is 1 pound over the average weight for her height and age, according to The Staten Island Advance. The letter was apparently issued as part of the New York City Department of Education's annual fitness assessment program and is playfully known as the "Fitnessgram."

It's on them once kids start developing eating disorders.

I mean this is probably the worse thing you could say to a little girl. They really are fascists.

Your own link attests to the fact that the children weren't supposed to know. Granted, they should have done it in a better manner such that the children needn't have found out, but your painting of them as deliberately telling the children is most dishonest.

This distinction doesn't solve the problem. Even if they somehow could find a way to only tell the parents, and in a discreet manner, you'll still have parents become convinced their kids are fat and telling them or pressuring them to eat less. Yes, most reasonable parents won't do this, but some parents would, and if their definition of "fat" would include the girl mentioned in the OP, this is pretty damned problematic.

I am not defending the system of evaluating students' weight, merely pointing out that that bit of seer's vitriol is baseless.

Really, you send this kind of note home with the kids and the kid isn't going to open it up? But that is not the only point - which is - why the freak is the school even doing this in the first place. It is none of their business!!!!

I will take that as a tacit retraction of your earlier claim that they deliberately told the children about the results.

While I did note earlier that they could have conveyed the message to the parents in a better manner, I do hope the children involved have learned a valuable lesson about obedience and privacy.

Actually this is pretty bad. At 66 pounds the child is in the 86th percentile and this likely does not account for dress size, the beginning of a growth spurt, daily activity, muscle to body fat ratio, and other health concerns.
Which brings up other problems with utilizing the BMI as the ONLY indicator of health

Anyone can be in a state of health excellence yet be "over weight" according to the BMI. Why? The BMI was invented by a belgian statstician in the 1800's and accounts for very not much else. except for belgians in the mid 1800's. and if you aren't that average, you're fat. Yes that's some oversimplification, however it does not account for population variances. some are a little larger some are a bit thinner. being neither truly over nor under weight, these are actually outliers.
                    (that's statistics, you have them)

It is not then the job of New York to determine if a 66 lb 4 ft 1 in child is overweight, nor is it their job to notify the parents. It is the job of the pediatrician to determine if there is a health concern. And I suspect the Physician thinks this child is in perfectly good health.

No. What the school did was more than innapropriate. If you want something to be private, you call the parents in. You NEVER send a note home especially not one that speaks of these concerns. This is not about obedience.

Insofar as some children disobeyed their disobedience is relevant.

Of course they shouldn't have disobeyed but it seems fair to assume that at least some will look so the consequences should have been nonetheless foreseen and considered. Generally, if a school has a high priority communication needed (such as to inform the parents of truancy or something), they will call, so it's somewhat surprising they did it in note form.

They should have just told her she was undertall. If I were just 6 inches taller, I'd be perfectly normal weight!

Not really a good point. What do you expect when you give a child a note for the parents and tell them not to read it? Just what happened.
