      Demi's thoughts:

Most likely virulent but not actually very deadly. But people will panic especially since the media have been sensationalising the spread in China. The spread is essentially unstoppable. Governments need people to be more concerned about hygiene and mass gatherings while not inducing a full blown panic, which explains a) the mixed signals and b) why almost all of them are not seriously testing for it.

There are countries who haven't seriously tested for it with much traffic from China (Hong Kong) and you don't see people dying in significant numbers. The Italians have bluntly said that the only reason why they are 'discovering' many cases is simply because they are bothering to seriously test for it. Otherwise it would have gone mostly unnoticed.

An Associated Press fact check confirms what Breitbart News reported earlier this week: that Democrat presidential candidates are falsely claiming that President Donald Trump cut funding and personnel needed to fight coronavirus.

On Tuesday, Breitbart News fact-checked “mostly false” claims by former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg during the Democrat debate in South Carolina. Bloomberg claimed that Trump had “fired” a pandemic specialist at the White House, and “defunded” the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The implication: Trump was to blame for the spread of coronavirus — even though there have been just over a dozen cases and no fatalities in the U.S.

The truth: the pandemic specialist had left voluntarily during a reorganization of the bloated National Security Council (NSC), and the CDC cuts — as the agency wound down its Ebola response — were only proposed, not enacted.

The AP confirmed Thursday, in an article titled “AP FACT CHECK: Democrats distort coronavirus readiness,” that much of what Democrats are saying about Trump’s response to the coronavirus challenge is simply not true...

Why? You can't do anything about the government, but you might be able to protect yourself from the virus.

Why shouldn't I be concerned about government? Conservatives have always been concerned about government. Did that suddenly change just because Trump's in office?

Snopes: Did Trump Fire the US Pandemic Response Team? TRUE:

...alarmed readers asked Snopes to verify a rumor that U.S. President Donald Trump had “fired the entire pandemic response team two years ago and then didn’t replace them.”...

                  TRUE

...Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer abruptly departed from his post leading the global health security team on the National Security Council in May 2018... and Ziemer’s team was disbanded. Tom Bossert, whom the Washington Post reported “had called for a comprehensive biodefense strategy against pandemics and biological attacks,” had been fired one month prior...

It’s thus true that the Trump administration axed the executive branch team responsible for coordinating a response to a pandemic and did not replace it...

Trump also cut funding for the CDC, forcing the CDC to cancel its efforts to help countries prevent infectious-disease threats from becoming epidemics in 39 of 49 countries in 2018. Among the countries abandoned? China. ...funding for the CDC’s global disease outbreak prevention efforts had been cut by 80%, including funding for the agency’s efforts in China.

                      Snopes?

They're selling the same distorted narrative as the Democrats. If you had bothered to actually read the Breitbart story, you world have noted that it was about the Associated Press independently verifying something that Breitbart had reported earlier.

Trump’s budgets have proposed cuts to public health, only to be overruled by Congress, where there’s strong bipartisan support for agencies such as the CDC and NIH. Instead, financing has increased.

Indeed, the money that government disease detectives first tapped to fight the latest outbreak was a congressional fund created for health emergencies.

Some public health experts say a bigger concern than White House budgets is the steady erosion of a CDC grant program for state and local public health emergency preparedness — the front lines in detecting and battling new disease. But that decline was set in motion by a congressional budget measure that predates Trump.

The broader point about there being “nobody here” to coordinate the response sells short what’s in place to handle an outbreak.

The public health system has a playbook to follow for pandemic preparation — regardless of who’s president or whether specific instructions are coming from the White House. Those plans were put into place in anticipation of another flu pandemic, but are designed to work for any respiratory-borne disease.

                      https://apnews.com/d36d6c4de29f4d04beda3db00cb46104

It's true that Bolton eliminated the Ebola response team because they were no longer needed, but the CDC is bigger than that, and they have the money, personnel, and procedures in place to handle the current situation.

But seriously, man, Snopes? You need better sources.

Maybe the administration thinks that if you don’t test for Covid-19, you don’t have it.

The administration has put it into Pence's hands... Pence is infamous for letting a preventable epidemic occur in his home state when he was governor by refusing to fund an appropriate response. Guess he prefers to pray things away instead.

The markets responded to Trump's announcement by plummeting, so people are obviously convinced he's got it under control.

New England Journal of medicine says that the coronavirus may be no worse than a bad season flu.

An editorial published Friday in the New England Journal of Medicine speculated that the coronavirus currently causing panic in world markets could turn out no worse than “a severe seasonal influenza” in terms of mortality.

Citing an analysis of the available data from the outbreak in China, the authors note that there have been zero cases among children younger than 15; and that the fatality rate is 2% at most, and could be “considerably less than 1%.”

Those who have died have been elderly or were already suffering from another illness — as with ordinary flu. The underlying data suggest that the symptoms varies, and fewer than one in six of the cases reported were “severe.”

The authors note that coronavirus looks to be much less severe than other recent outbreaks of respiratory illnesses:
"[T]he overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively."

The vast majority of patients recover, and among those who are hospitalized, the median stay thus far is 12 days.

Coronavirus, they note, does spread easily, and the average infected person has infected two other people. That means the U.S. should expect the illness to gain a “foothold.” But they note travel restrictions on China (imposed by President Donald Trump over the objections of some critics) “may have helped slow the spread of the virus.”

That's what the Danish National Health Service also reported. People should focus more on getting their flu shots instead.
