It's hard to be certain, but things do seem to be leaning towards no witnesses followed by acquittal. Of course the vote for no witnesses could change at a moment's notice. And you know that won't be the end of it. House Democrats have already indicated that they plan to keep investigating and impeaching until they're (hopefully) reduced to the minority party in November. I would also hope that any future articles of impeachment the House might deliver to the Senate will be immediately dismissed upon receipt

If they wanted to cover it up, it would be more for reasons of keeping the fearmongering narrative about Russia interference and meddling going, because having a national boogieman serves the military and intelligence community. But if they vote for witnesses, I don't see how they could avoid it when that was part of their opening argument. I also think Rep senators genuinely dislike Obama, probably even more than Biden.

I expect the republicans to cave. They always capitulate and then the democrats take advantage of them. They will vote to allow witnesses and then the democrats will bring in their own witnesses while somehow disallowing the ones the GOP wants.

So, I don't think there's any scenario anymore where the vote would be less than 50 against, and Roberts will NOT be the tie-breaker.
