And if states that pay more taxes are happier, why isn't California one of the happiest states instead of one of the most miserable?

I assume you will now concede that this statement was erroneous.
no. because there are a lot more poor people than rich ones in California, DOb.

And the rich ones are the ones who you claim don't pay their fair share of taxes, right? So they are happier because they are not paying taxes and are spending their own money on themselves.

Why doesn't California use their liberal government to give everyone homes and healthcare? They have the richest people in the world living there. Surely they could tax them at a high enough rate to support the poor people there?

If everyone's rich then no one's rich :). So kind of a requirement.

You're just making this up . And many of the well off don't pay their fair share of taxes due to Prop 13. Including people I'm related to .

I saw a graph yesterday or the day before which shows how generous the California health care subsidy is. It dramatically subsidizes those who make just a bit too much to get the federal one (or the federal one wasn't enough, I don't remember).

Land is too expensive out here. It's a real problem and one for which I don't have a solution. I hope someone smarter than me has some ideas.

Gavin Newson, more left than Jerry Brown, won 62% to 38%. That's what's known in the biz as a 'shellacking'.

We are getting way off track here. My initial comment was in regards to Starlight's chart which showed California as being lightly taxed and miserable. I showed it was one of the more highly taxed and is miserable. I will concede that rich people are happy there. And the weather is nice.

Considering that there are more than twice as many registered Democrats than there are Republicans he should have won by more than a 2-to-1 margin but didn't.

As I already posted, Gavin Newson won 62% to 38%. Obviously people in general, not just the rich, are happy with the direction the state is heading in.

Which of course explains why people are leaving in droves.

It looks like so many have left that California will actually be losing a seat in the House of Representatives after the 2020 census -- a first.

Sheesh I can't have a discussion with you can I? But it is obvious that the rich are happier than the people who have to live on the streets and that the rich keep as much money as they can and live lavish life styles. Please deny that if you can.

The poor keep voting Democrat because they keep being lied to. Why hasn't their standard of living gotten better? Why isn't it better than the rest of the USA? Why hasn't California become the liberal paradise that the Democrats keep promising us if we turn the entire nation into a liberal socialist country? If it works, why hasn't it worked in California? Why is the divide between the Haves and Have-not's so huge there? Shouldn't things be more equal?

California has a quite sizeable no party affiliation group. Both myself and my wife are registered NPA.

Regardless, overall, people are clearly happy with the state. I'm not going to get into the weeds over this.

I don't know the answers to most of your questions. As to this one, yes. California was the first or second state to pass a $15 minimum wage. California imposed several additional taxes on incomes > 250K in recent years etc.

You don't like it here don't move here. But do keep taking our federal tax dollars. That hardly makes you look entitled and selfish.

That phrase actually has an interesting history that few today realize:

The theory of the exceptionalism of the U.S. has developed over time and can be traced to many sources. French political scientist and historian Alexis de Tocqueville was the first writer to describe the country as "exceptional" in 1831 and 1840. The actual phrase "American exceptionalism" was originally coined by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in 1929 as a critique of a revisionist faction of American communists who argued that the American political climate was unique, making it an 'exception' to certain elements of Marxist theory.

It's come to have a totally different meaning in conservative/republican circles these days. We may be an exception to the rest of the industrialized world, but we are in no way exceptional, or better, when it comes to the lives of the people.

I actually switched from Democrat in 2016 to protest how the DNC handled the debate schedule in order to punish Sanders.
