  • Obama's see no evil approach on terrorism

Obama was roundly condemned for refusing to name terrorist acts for what they were, terrorist acts committed for the purpose of using terror to advance goals of radical Islam.

Was that conciliatory approach effective in combating terrorism?

It wasn't just Obama. George W. was also hesitant to call Islamic extremism what it was.

I am amused by the notion that saying the magic words "Islamic Terrorism" is supposed to accomplish anything at all.

Conservatives seem to have convinced themselves it's almost a magic spell and if you say the incantation then world's problems are magically solved. It's a really bizarre idea/concern on their part. Perhaps because they lack the intelligence and policies to seriously address the issues, all they can do is focus on the words and finger point when their magic words aren't uttered enough?

If you are afraid to even call it what it is then you can hardly be expected to combat it effectively.

If the current crop of politicians were around in the early 40s we wouldn't have declared war against Japan after Pearl Harbor but would instead have declared war on airplanes for fear of upsetting the Japanese people.

They're no longer Islamic terrorists. They're now Austere Religious Scholars. Just ask the Washington Post.

It's politics. Some people probably feel more votes will be lost than gained by qualifying a terrorist act as "Islamic".

I'm shocked to see you resort to the straw man fallacy. Your arguments are usually so much better. No, really.

Conservatives like to call things what they actually are.
Liberals like to lie and call things what they are not -- pro-abortion becomes "pro choice", abortion becomes "selective termination", unborn baby becomes "just tissue".... Liberals often have to be totally dishonest about what things actually are to try to sound less nutty or evil.

Even THEY realized what a pantload that was, and had to try to retract it before too many people noticed.

George Orwell warned us about attempts to control our ability to express ourselves.

Is that like how conservatives call themselves "pro-life" when they are pro-war and pro-gun?

                        Indeed.

Worth bearing in mind democratic socialism is a very leftist liberal position.

That was about as retarded a statement. Actually, considering California has some of the worse emissions violations, maybe even less.

                            I am neither pro-war or pro-gun.

I disagree, it is about recognizing and defining the problem.

G W Bush did push through a controversial agenda to combat terrorism, such as with the Patriot Act. The one area which there was disagreement (among conservatives) had to do with how Islamic terrorism was defined. Was the terror threat inherent in Islam itself, or was it a product of Islamic fundamentalism, or a problem inherent in fundamentalism itself? Three approaches which lead to distinct policies.

And yes, I did not address Obama's approaches.
