The executive powers granted to the president are not bound by law due to the separation of powers. Law is a legislative power given by the constitution same as the executive powers. A power is only answerable to a greater power so they tie.
The president is under the law as a citizen but in his exercising of the executive powers he is above the law. This is what Uncle Ben was talking about when he said ‘with great power comes great responsibility’. The president is entrusted with these powers with the condition that they would be only used for the people.
So to answer your question, it’s ‘legal’ if it was done for legitimate reasons.

I'm inclined to agree with you about legitimacy of purpose. But it's not a good argument for the current issue. The Democrats are clearly not acting in good faith, they have not made a compelling case and they are not going to convince the public without a solid case built on strong evidence at this point. It's political suicide now even though it might be legitimate in a better case."He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose." - Jim Elliot

The president is above the law when it comes to executive power because its vested in the president by the constitution. Executive powers and the president are not the same, congressional powers can bind the president but it can't limit restrict or have any effect on executive powers.
What do you think of Trumps behavior regarding these proceedings?
Aren't the polls showing 50% of Americans want Trump impeached and removed?

A) First of all, it's a poll, and
2) it depends on when and how the question was framed, and
3) our nation is not a nation of polls, which would be a democracy, but a representative republic.
Our form of government was intended, in part, to keep from constantly responding to "the will of the people", who can be quite fickle.
An more interesting poll might include a third option --- that the President be impeached and censured, but not removed.
In fact, a more recent poll shows that support for impeachment has actually dropped.
Support for impeachment drops after second week of hearings: Poll
Two weeks of impeachment-related hearings have left the country divided over whether President Trump should be pushed from office, a new poll shows.
The Quinnipiac University poll, released Tuesday, found support for the president’s impeachment had dropped from 48% in late October to 45% a month later. The poll surveyed 1,355 registered voters from Nov. 21-25, with a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percentage points.
So much for polls.Last edited by Cow Poke; 12-02-2019, 07:25 PM.The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

Well, lookie there!!!! It's right there in Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution of the United States....
The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors -- OR if 50% or more of Americans think they should be impeached and removed, then throw the bum out!!!
(bolded part facetiously added)The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.
