With regard to the jews the majority could have been influenced by the church:

It was an example listed among all the other examples of how you could arrive at the wrong conclusions. As has been pointed out numerous times those who claim to speak on behalf of a higher power or claim to have a higher authority based on a religious belief often point others in the completely wrong direction, just like people go in the wrong direction in the example you yourself provided.
