    • Democrats seem to be using the word "scheme" quite a lot in today's hearing. It must have polled well in their focus groups!

Yes, because when you think of Donald Trump, the last thing you think of is “scheming.” He has the dignified air of a rules-following statesman.

They tried "quid pro quo", but that didn't play well, so they settled on "bribery"... now they're saying "scheme".

They're gonna keep trying until something sticks!

That is your choice, but realize you just spat in the face of an honest effort to try to understand why we see things so differently.

Nonsense, they used quid pro quo all day to descibe the nature of Trumps scheme in the very same hearings.

All 3 phrases/words apply almost equally well, depending on which aspect of what was done is being discussed.

Because imprecise language and equivocation is exactly what you want to hear when considering the very serious matter of impeaching a US president.

Look, I get that you guys hate Trump, but even you have to acknowledge that the Democrats are playing fast and loose here.

Look, I get that you love Trump, but even you have to acknowledge that his bizarre diplomacy needlessly invited increased scrutiny. Literally dozens of people alarmed by what he was doing. That should anger you because of the spent opportunity, but instead you sound like Gloria Steinem defending Bill Clinton in the Lewinsky affair. You’re sick, dude.

No. What they are saying is "abuse of power" and "obstruction of Congress". That covers the lot.

It looks like that's what they've settled on, two vague and amorphous terms that don't describe any actual crimes. In fact, Democrats are claiming that "abuse of power" and "obstruction of Congress" can refer to perfectly legal acts that are done with the "wrong" motives.

                              • First, the Democrats are trying to change the standard of impeachment. They are literally changing the rules to fit their theatrical story. Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler wrote in the preface that the previous reports on grounds for impeachable offenses in the Nixon and Clinton eras “remain useful points of reference, but no longer reflect the best available learning on questions relating to presidential impeachment.”

Why, Jerry? Because you have no evidence for legitimate grounds of impeachment? This only proves that President Trump indeed does not belong in the ranks of Nixon and Clinton, where there was actually evidence of impeachable offenses.

Second, the Democrats are proceeding with impeachment against President Trump not because of any past wrongdoing which they have no proof of, but to “save the Nation” from Trump remaining in office. That is not a constitutionally permissible reason to impeach. That’s why we have elections. The American people get to decide who remains in office, absent clear evidence of impeachable offenses actually committed. We don’t impeach or convict based on a vague fear for democracy from the opposition party.

The Report, however, claims that impeachment exists, “not to inflict punishment for past wrongdoing, but rather to save the Nation from misconduct that endangers democracy and the rule of law.” This is not the standard for any legal proceeding in any context in the United States. We do not bring charges (even articles of impeachment) or convict based on the possibility of a future threat “to democracy” or otherwise.
