  • Trump prohibits California's higher emissions standards

What has Trump done to hurt the environment:

Well, that is a long list, but here is one that should be accessible to nearly everyone.

Remember the LA problems with Smog?

    LASmog.jpeg

Well that is one reason why California has stricter emissions requirements than the Federal Government mandates. And 24 other states have adopted those same standards. The impact is auto makers don't make cars with different emissions controls for different states, so the impact is all cars effectively meet these standards, giving cleaner air in all US cities, not just those states that follow the CA standards. But, of course, that does make cars a little more expensive than they would be otherwise.

Now Trump pushes back, says they can't do that anymore.

Is this some petty personal beef with the Governor of CA? Probably.

Who wants to lower emission standards on vehicles? Do you want cars emitting MORE noxious gasses? No-one I know of.

So - who around here would defend this? And if so why.

My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism. James 2:1

If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not  bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless James 1:26

This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; James 1:19

It might help generate discussion if you presented a balanced source that tells both sides of the story.

Right, there must be a reason behind it. Or he just hates California, which is reasonable.

If California government weren't so totally out of control, there probably wouldn't be federal action against the state's violation of the US Constitution -- the individual states are not supposed to interfere with interstate commerce.

The other question is "do we want every state taxed more so that Los Angeles has less smog?" I do appreciate the sentiment, but I would like it if you just send money directly to me.

This smog issue shouldn't be a problem since we will be enhancing the economies of many foreign oppressive governments when California requires all cars to be electric. We will have lots of new hazardous waste issues from the new technologies.

So far you have made two posts in it without sharing your perspective or giving us the other side. Why bother doing that instead of sharing the important stuff? It wouldn't be because you don't have anything of importance to share, would it?

Seems to make sense, if California employed this and they're a great market for cars, it would bifurcate the American car market. It would be a rather bad precedence for the US to let market regulations be a state-by-state venture. That should be regulated on a federal level.

You can disagree with the particular federal regulation (or deregulation here), but I think its a good idea to stop this.

Have you ever had to pay for a smog test, every 2 years, and than pay several hundred dollars in replacement parts and labor to get your car back into emissions standards?

I’m from southern California and have several members of my family dreading when they have to get their car smog check done. You never know when you’ll be hit with a 500 dollar + repair bill so you can get your car back into spec. This is on top of the higher cost of living and taxes. Maybe Jim would like to be hit with this sort of repair cost, on a fixed or low income.

I won't have to, I'm getting an electrical car.

In the near future, It will probably require some horrendous waste disposal fee when people junk their electric cars in California.

Just be sure to save up for the inevitable electric car tax.

All the car batteries, of all the electrical cars, in the world, in a thousand years of production, could fit into a corner of the dumping grounds for coal sludge, or inside an insignificant spot of the collosal natural areas in the US that have been irreversibly obliterated by coal mining.

Why Coal Power is being given a pass, will never cease to amaze me.
