  • Arraignment and Charges

In California suspects are arraigned 48 hours after being put in jail. Charges are filed then.

I was interested to learn that the Colorado STEM shooting suspects appeared in court but wasn't apparently even arraigned. This is then a state thing, not federal?

I can only speculate that Colorado law required them to bring the suspects to court no matter what? That's why I'm asking. Google isn't helpful.

well usually they do something in court, not just parade them around.

seems like the arraignment would have to come first or at least the same time. Usually they charge the suspect, then the defense attorney asks for bail.

Nothing that I've seen explains exactly what it was about aside from the facts that they spoke only to the judge, the young man signed some paper, and the prosecution said they needed more time to file charges 😧.

They're supposed to appear in court today in the afternoon. Charges ARE expected to be filed today.

In this snapshot, it says the SCOTUS says 72 hours is the maximum. I know New York has up to 24 hours.

The situation may be a bit unusual when a suspect has been brought in right after the incident ... compared to someone who has become a suspect before being apprehended
