A lot of the criticism of Harris that I've read over the years about this issue arises from the left. It isn't so much over whether or not she calls herself "black" but rather "African-American."

Apparently there is a vocal minority among liberal blacks who object to someone who's ancestors weren't slaves in America calling themselves African-American. They don't think that you can be legitimately African-American unless your family comes from that experience and don't like blacks who came to America after the Civil War and especially those who came a hundred years or more after, claiming that title.

I'm not sure how/why they think that those black Jamaican's came over to the Caribbean. It's not like black slave labor was a uniquely American thing.

There is a myth that slavery was worse in North America than the rest of the New World. This has been disproved multiple times by various studies. Even back during the era of slavery it was well known that a slave sent to the Caribbean or Brazil had it much worse and had a much shorter life expectancy.

One explanation that I heard wrt to Jamaica specifically was that some of the blacks were descended from pirates and not slaves.

Of course, the vast majority of people are multi-racial, so why Harris should suddenly be unable to be referred to as "black" is a bit of a mystery...

I keep arguing that race is far more a social construct than based on biology although it is so ingrained in our thinking it is nearly impossible to avoid.
