  • Do-nothing Republican government gives up on press briefings

I came across this interesting image today on twitter:

Apart from the typo in the title, it's an interesting figure showing that Sarah Hucksterbee-Sanders has all but given up on bothering to do her job. I sure a lot of people would love to be able to choose to only turn up for work 1-5 days a month like she's been doing for the last 6 months.

I guess your administration only needs press briefings once a month if you aren't actually doing any governing or passing any legislation.

Let's bear in mind that the Republican party controls all the branches of government. And yet, in two years of 'governing' the only real law they've passed worth talking about was their 'tax cuts'. What is even the point of having Republicans in power if they don't do anything at all?

The content of the once-a-month press briefings could be summarized as:
"Yeah, we still haven't passed any legislation despite having control of all branches of govt.

Yes, the President is now under an additional investigation since last month.

Yes, the President still golfs more hours per week and watches Fox News more hours per week than he governs.

Yes, we are still imprisoning the children of immigrants and callously separating families.

    End briefing"

Is this sort of dog's-breakfast what you right-wingers here want of your government? Are you proud?

Amid the increasing volley of bombshell stories, the Trump administration has been more or less obliged to abandon regular briefings from the White House press secretary. They were becoming too embarrassing. Besides, why bother with press briefings when you can tweet what you want to world to believe, without having to deal with pesky questions.

Who needs press briefings when twitter is available?

The Belgians had no major problems when there were no laws being passed due to their inability to form a government.

I would say Belgium has already passed a lot of the laws the US needs to - I would vastly rather live in Belgium than the US. And therefore the govt in Belgium being non-existent isn't as much of a problem as it is in the US.

But in the US in general, there was a lot of complaining about gridlock under Bush and Obama where many a time neither side could pass the laws they wanted because they didn't have control of the government. Briefly (~4 months) under Obama, Dems had full control and they passed Obamacare, completely revamping the healthcare system in the US. Republicans have now had 2 years being in control, and the only meaningful thing they've passed is a tax bill so widely loathed that even many/most Republican voters don't approve of it.

So why would any voter bother to give Republicans power if they are as bad as gridlock at actually doing anything? They don't seem to be a party of governing, just a party of whining.

I'm not sure if it's dishonesty or naivety that leads you to suggest that the White House press secretary's sole duty is to appear in front of the cameras.

Why bother with the "daily" brief any more? It's a fossil.

            Source: https://www.npr.org/2018/10/11/656661343/no-longer-daily-white-house-press-briefings-fade-as-trump-does-the-talking

Kumar, who tracks presidential interactions with the press, says if you combine press conferences and these more incidental interactions, Trump has personally taken questions more frequently than former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and George H. W. Bush at the same point in their presidencies (Bill Clinton has Trump beat, however). In less than 10 months in 2018, Trump has already surpassed his total from 2017, she says.

"The good government, on-paper side of me says, 'Of course there should be a regular briefing,' " says Fleischer. "The realist watching the hostility between the Trump White House and the press corps in both directions says, 'What's the point of the briefing?' There's no news. It's just hostility."

It's not a fossil, its is (or should be) an explicit opportunity for the press to frame political issues and explain the president's position on the issues of the day to the public. Whilst it is not a formal part of the political system, the 'Fourth Estate' is as much a part of the 'checks and balances' of the system as Congress.

Except, of course, when they're in the tank for one party or the other.

                          And today...

'Do your job, Sarah!' Reporters shout after first White House briefing in weeks lasts 15 minutes:

The televised briefing with Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was the first since Nov. 27. Reporters, seemingly frustrated with the tight-lipped press office, continued to shout questions at Sanders even after she wrapped up the briefing.

One could be heard shouting, "This is a 10-minute briefing, Sarah!" Another yelled, "Do your job, Sarah!"

They are finding it more difficult by the day to defend the indefensible. Though she's an excellent liar, even she must be relieved to be on her way outa there.
