  • The Death Of Free Speech In England...

From what I understand the pedophiles in this trial are all Muslim.

Tommy Robinson Arrested Outside UK Court, Jailed For 13 Months As Judge Orders Orwellian Media Blackout

UK activist and English Defence Leage founder Tommy Robinson was arrested on Friday outside of Leeds Crown Court for reporting on a pedophile grooming trial. Within six hours of his arrest, Robinson was handed a 13 month prison term for violating a prior suspended sentence for a similar offense, while media outlets were banned from covering the incident by the court - with several removing reports which had already been published.

“A big police van with about seven police officers pulled up and arrested [Robinson] and told him to stop live streaming,” Robinson’s producer told RT (before their article (archived) was scrubbed from the internet). “They said it was incitement and a breach of the peace.

“No peace has been breached – there were two other people there and he’s been perfectly quiet talking into his phone. [The police] said nothing about the court proceedings. It’s very strange.”

Disturbingly, the judge who sentenced Robinson, Geoffrey Marson QC, ordered an Orwellian media blackout - which resulted in several publications deleting their articles from the web covering Robinson's arrest.

U.K. right-wing activist and journalist Tommy Robinson was arrested and reportedly jailed Friday after he filmed members of an alleged child grooming gang entering a court for trial -- but the details of his purported sentence remain murky after the judge ordered the press not to report on the case.

Robinson, the former head of the English Defense League and a longtime activist against Islam and Islamic migration, was arrested after he was filming men accused of being part of a gang that groomed children. Britain has been rocked by a series of child sex scandals perpetuated by gangs of predominantly Muslim men.

The article indicates he was sentenced to 13 months in prison almost immediately after his arrest. Does this mean that contempt of court is punished without a trial?

I guess, never mind that the judge ordered a press blackout.

This may not be Orwellian in nature. The guy who was arrested is known for encouraging violent protests and he was violating a suspended sentence by being at the trial and filming. I can't comment on the order for silence of the press but I wouldn't hold him as the ideal example of a persecuted quiet citizenfor doing no wrong when he really has quite a rap sheet

Chances are the 13 months was for the violation and him being on a suspended sentence.

Judges in the UK and most commonwealth countries such as Australia, have the power to order whatever they see fit in order to ensure a fair trial; including the banning of prejudicial media.

Yep. It's pretty common here for judges to place limits on media reporting of cases. Particularly, for the person being charged to request and be granted name suppression seems to be the rule rather than the exception. America has a particularly public court system compared to other countries (part of which is related to the election of judges... I couldn't name a single judge in my own country - court cases here are not treated as a public circus the same way that the media tends to do in the US, and that's compounded by the fact that our Supreme Court can't declare laws unconstitutional so the elected Parliament and not the judiciary are the final legal authority (same in the UK) so the courts don't have ultimate power like they do in the US).

As for overall trends, I don't think much has changed over the decades. It's not gradually tending Orwellian or anything like that. I would tend to dismiss the OP article as absurd manufactured outrage that British courts don't follow US rules (spoiler alert: They never have).

I thought it was normal for contempt of court findings to be enforced immediately.

Pretty much what has already been said in the thread- though you should note that he was a former head of the EDL. The quote above mentions it in passing, but he isn't your average right-wing activist. He's more like those lovely chaps from Charlottesville. It's telling they didn't refer to him as a far right-wing activist tbh.

I did a little research, Great Britain and other places in Europe don't have a "free for all" and never have had a "free for all" like in the U.S. when it comes to free speech or free press. This can be both good and bad. Someone like Westboro would exist but would exist in the underground and they certainly wouldn't get the attention they've gotten over the years. They would have been arrested numerous times already.
