  • Democrats Vs. Liberals

I have caught myself a number of times saying "Democrat" when I really meant "Liberal".

I'm wondering, though, if this distinction is disappearing.

I have known quite a few older Democrats, who were really quite conservative, and can't seem to face the fact that their party has long ago abandoned them.

While I still think there's a difference between "Democrat" and "Liberal", I wonder how many CONSERVATIVE Democrats are still around. Particularly in high profile places.

Have "Democrat" and "Liberal" become pretty much the same?

As far as I can tell, they have.

I'll be interested to hear what other people say though.

Umm.... No. We have some relatively conservative democrats in my family, but their the old southern democrats....... Not changing em at all. Also I have a grandpa whose a registered democrat, but hasn't voted with the party since Carter, and since is not pleased with the way Carter has been acting.

Yes, I grew up in a very Democrat, pro-union, Catholic household. On the wall was a picture of Jesus, the Pope, John Kennedy and Vince Lombardi (we were Italian) in that order. But the Democrats of my youth were very pro military, pro life and rational. Generally fiscally conservative. My father, a WW2 vet, and involved in town politics, was heartbroken over the years as he saw the direction of the party. I doubt that he would be welcomed in the Democratic party of today.

                  Republicans are liberals, too.
                  Don't call it a comeback. It's a riposte.

Of course, there are probably at least 3 different definitions of "liberal," even within Political Science. If you get a political theorist, an American politics specialist, and an International Relations expert to talk about liberalism, you're going to end up with some very different discussions.

Liberal used to mean someone who believed in liberty - no longer...

No, I'm thinking of liberalism in the classic Jeffersonian sense.

                            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_liberalism

Classical liberalism is a political philosophy and ideology belonging to liberalism in which primary emphasis is placed on securing the freedom of the individual by limiting the power of the government. The philosophy emerged as a response to the Industrial Revolution and urbanization in the 19th century in Europe and the United States.[1] It advocates civil liberties with a limited government under the rule of law, private property, and belief in laissez-faire economic liberalism.[2][3][4] Classical liberalism is built on ideas that had already arisen by the end of the 18th century, including ideas of Adam Smith, John Locke, Jean-Baptiste Say, Thomas Malthus, and David Ricardo. It drew on a psychological understanding of individual liberty, natural law, utilitarianism, and a belief in progress.[5]
