Not if you are using it to become a teacher or if it is part of another career oriented major

Unfortunately, it was doubled with a Christian Ministry degree with the plan of my becoming a priest. Because of my declining health, I'm entering a new period of discernment. Our previous graduates have used their History degrees in academic and non-acedemic fields and have had prosperous careers which tells me that such a degree is still has economic value and it isn't another useless, fanciful pursuit.

If you're smart and driven to succeed you can use just about any degree as a starting point. Most degrees have transferable skills and for many jobs just having one is used as a test to make sure the employee weeds out the worst applicants since they can't use stuff like IQ tests except in very limited settings. The main benefit of the "junk" degrees is usually well developed writing skills. Communication skills are useful just about everywhere.

The real problem with these degrees are all the idiots who do them for the sake of doing a degree because STEM is too hard and business is too hard to get into (the good business/finance/accounting schools in ontario have ridiculous entry barriers, I've heard of people with 97% HS average getting rejected) for them but otherwise have a mediocre intellect and no real talent for anything.

And blue collar careers put you in a less respected class - stupidly.

I've heard of people with a 4.0 GPA (on a 4-point scale) getting rejected at Penn State's main campus. My HS GPA wasn't that great, but I was a veteran and had great SAT scores when I applied.

You can do a lot with a history degree. I'm in a PhD program in history and graduates go on to all sorts of careers.

Now it's all about maintaining high graduation rates.

my previous comment was that I think we need to prevent kids from just wasting tax money on degrees that won't lead to paying jobs and ends up with them on the dole taking even more tax money instead of contributing to society. If they want to take the chance with such degrees as "women's studies" then they should go to a private college and pay for it using traditional means.

I think the private colleges would probably still provide a "better" education than a government funded one. but at least if there were a minimum way to get college degree to help get people in the work force without putting them in debt for life then I would not be opposed to it.

Hehe, well I suppose it's a good job that I attend a private Christian university.

That makes sense for top programs at top universities, 4.0 GPA usually ranges 90-100% (or 80-100% at my college). Here high schools don't use gpa and there's no SAT equivalent, all marks are on a 0-100 scale so differentiation based on marks in the top 10% is possible.
