  • West Virginia Dem Governor flips to Trump party

During a speech at President Trump’s rally in West Virginia on Thursday, the state’s Governor, Jim Justice announced he is changing his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican.

Let me just say this to you as bluntly as I can say it, West Virginia, at the altar, when we had it done, like it or not like it, but the Democrats walked away from me. Now, today I will tell you, with lots of prayers and lots of thinking, today I’ll tell you as West Virginians, I can’t help you anymore being a Democrat governor. So tomorrow, I will be changing my registration to Republican.”

Voters flipped for election, now governor is flipping!!!

The background seems to be that this guy had always been a Republican (until 2015), but found it a convenient political ploy to put himself on the Democratic ticket in 2015 in order to run against the previous governor of West Virginia in the 2016 elections. He's now decided it's an appropriate time to end the charade and switch back to being openly Republican again.

So he's 66, and spent his whole life as a member of the Republican party, except for the last 2 years when he was pretending to be a Democrat for convenience...

Wow, he's flipping to Republican!!!! Must be because Trump's so great!!!

It could signify a renewed confidence in the Republican brand, which can certainly be attributed to President Trump.

Presumably then his switch to the Democrats in 2015 could have signified a renewed confidence in the Democrat brand, which could certainly be attributed to President Obama. Right?

Or a loss of confidence in the Republican brand.

WV is an interesting state politically. It is generally pretty conservative in outlook, but labor unions are important.

Or that he just did what was politically in his best interest.

I don't think very well of politicians who change party while in office - excepting close to the end of term. Didn't like it when Shelby did it years ago, either.

UK MPs who change party allegiance often resign and seek re-election. I can't see Jim Justice doing that, even though many of those who voted for him will have done so because of his party allegiance.

For the convenience of being able to stand for governor in a state where there was already an established Republican candidate?

It's must be very convenient for the Republican party to have both main party candidates in the election for Governor being Republicans - and to have an opposing Democrat organisation that allowed it to happen.
