Enraged Sept. 11 families tear into TikTokkers’ ‘sympathy’ for Osama bin Laden, call it ‘appalling’

A furious group representing scores of 9/11 families says it is “appalling” that young TikTok users are sharing Osama bin Laden’s “Letter to America” and showing “sympathy” for the terror leader.

“No Americans should ever not know Osama bin Laden was a terrorist who helped mastermind the murder of nearly 3,000 innocent Americans on Sept. 11, 2001,” seethed Terry Strada, national chair of 9/11 Families United — an organization that represents more than 10,000 relatives of the slain victims, survivors and those sickened or injured in the terror attacks — to The Post in a statement.

The group’s statement echoed one released by the White House, which decried the videos promoting bin Laden’s 2002 letter as an “insult” to the “innocent” victims of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

“There is never a justification for spreading the repugnant, evil and antisemitic lies that the leader of al Qaeda issued just after committing the worst terrorist attack in American history — highlighting them as his direct motivation for murdering 2,977 innocent Americans,” White House spokesman Andrew Bates said

Overall, the content of the letter is just a banal critique of American foreign policy and cultural decline. The one hilarity is that he suggests Palestinians have a historical claim to the region when Palestinian nationalism is more or less a product of the decline of the Ottoman Empire rather than a product of historical occupation, especially prior to the Jews/Israelites. He roots Palestinian claims in being them being the inheritors of Moses and the real Torah and the Muslim conquest of migration to the region.

Looks to me like they are being independent thi kers and actually investigating history themselves and seeing that their government lied to them about the reasons for the attack. And clearly that's making some people upset that they aren't just taking things at face value

If you read the letter, it's rather tame coming from a collectivist and (actual) conservative framework. Islam is much more temporally theocratic than Christianity. The letter itself is rather uncontroversial all things considered. The Guardian had no problem platforming Osama until it was trending. The Guardian either should have not platformed Osama in the first place or have backbone and standby the publishing.

All things considered, I wouldn't be surprised. Democracy has made the West near-sighted.

It's troubling that young tiktokers can read a document on the internet alleged to be from someone and be so emotionally moved and manipulated by it. Their trust in something with such minimal evidence that it's legit is the most disturbing part, aside from the fact their showing so much affection towards someone who is a terrorist that committed one of the worse acts in US history.

After 9/11 a lot of the US explanations circulating in the public consciousness about why the attacks had occurred seemed to be along the lines of "they hate us for our freedoms", "they hate us because they hate us".

There seemed a strong wilful blindness by Americans towards any consideration whatever of the motivations, opinions, and views of others. The idea that there might be anything to learn from how other people in the world saw America and its history of actions on the world stage was rejected so strongly that it was a bit horrifying. It came across in a way that reflected very badly on Americans. As an external observer, it was like the US had been lobotomized, there seemed a mental inability on Americans' parts to even consider fairly basic questions about the topic.

I can't say I've watched any of the TikToks or read more of Osama's letter than summaries and skim reading, but it is an important part of history to understand Osama's explanation and motivations. I absolutely condemn The Guardian for bowing to conservative cancel culture and taking down their page of Osama's letter explaining his actions. It absurdly plays into the US psychosis of refusing to believe Osama can have had reasons. A blank refusal to learn from history and understand what motivated him invites a repeat of history because it prevents anyone stopping those motivations recurring if people are not allowed to know what those motivations were.

Really, I wonder if they agreed with the part about sexual immorality? And bin Laden failed to mention how Islam conquered and colonized countries all around the world. The very same thing he accused us of Islam has been doing for centuries.
