  • If Not Biden-Trump, Who?

For the purposes of this thread, both Biden and Trump drop out of the Presidential race. This is not a thread to debate the reasons for their dropping out.

Who do you think would be the nominees for the parties.

For the Democrats, I'm going with Harris-Buttigieg. Since the Democrats are stuck in seeing everything through a race or LGBTQ+ lens, that's where they end up.

The Republicans are harder to guess. I think DeSantis is done. My personal favorite at this point is a Haley and Scott ticket. Not sure it matters to me who's the Presidential and who's the Vice-President.

Which gives the interesting result that for the first time in US history, a straight, white male isn't on either ticket.

I dunno. Harris polls terribly even when out of the spotlight, and Buttigieg has zero Black support. Harris-Buttigieg would lose to Minnie Mouse and Wile E. Coyote; I'm pretty sure even the Democrats recognize that.

I agree with you. I think the Democrats are so stuck in identity politics that they have no choice. Can you really see them putting a black woman and a gay man aside for a white male like Newsom? Maybe they would go with Whitmer and TBD instead.

All of Trump's Republican challengers are so far behind in the polls that it's hard to say which of them might manage to take the lead if Trump was somehow knocked out of the running. I know that both the Republican and Democrat parties would love to see DeSantis as the nominee, but he's one of those candidates who the more voters get to know him, the less they like him.

On the Democrat side, Gavin Newsom is clearly being groomed as Joe's replacement.

It is more or less depressing that when we really, really need a decent candidate somewhere, somehow, there is none to be found - even if you could convince them to run.

If the Democrats go with Newsom, I hope the Republican nominee reminds the people that the Democrats believe in all this identity politics and your important and capable no matter your race, sex, or gender selection UNTIL it's time to run for President. Then only a white male can do the job.

Joe Biden beat both Harris and Buttigieg in the 2020 primary. The runner-up was Bernie Sanders.

That kind of leaves Gavin Newsom who has a great deal of baggage of his own. Of course if old Joe is removed from the field it'll open the flood gates. I figure everyone who ran in 2020 will throw their hat into the ring starting with Cory Booker

Harris was the first to drop out because she had virtually zero support. Don't remember if she even lasted to the first primary.

That'll largely depend on who the Republican nominee is.

The point being that the idea Democrats are so enmeshed in "identity politics" that white, hetero candidates couldn't win a presidential primary needs some better historical evidence. Of course, the Catch-22 has already been deployed: Democrats are so caught up in identity politics that they'd necessarily pick a minority-representative candidate but if they don't do that, it only proves the point that their talk about a more inclusive politics is all bunk when it comes to actual political power.

There isn't a thin bench for 2028 Democratic contenders (Harris, Warren, Whitmer, Shapiro, Booker, Newsome, Pritzker, Brown, Ocasio-Cortez all come to mind) but there isn't really any sense to imagining who'd take the place of Biden and Trump in a 2024 ticket. If Biden were to be invalidated for some reason, it'd be well past the time for a meaningful primary and we'd Harris almost certainly taking the nomination. If Trump is out, DeSantis is still the expected runner-up. Barring several unforeseen events to multiple candidates, the boring answer is by far the most plausible: Harris v. DeSantis 2024.

They would definitely do that. After all they voted Biden over Harris and Buttigieg as the nominee last time.

Newsom seems like would be the top choice for the Democrats. Then it is up to him to choose who to bring along as VP.

Out of all of the ones running on the GOP side, I still like DeSantis. But I also like Scott. I don't think Haley has the charisma to win the nomination.

DeSantis appears to be fading. I wouldn't put my money on him.

One of DeSantis' biggest failings is his deficiency of charisma. Next to him everyone else is quite the charmer.
