  • House Repeals Obamacare

    A good start!

After years of debate, the House on Thursday voted to repeal key parts of the Affordable Care Act and replace them with new provisions.

The vote, which President Donald Trump was planning to tout as a big victory, sends the Republican-sponsored bill to gut Obamacare to the Senate for consideration.

You realize this means absolutely nothing.
The House of Representatives voted so they could claim to have kept a promise - it will get shot down in the Senate or otherwise altered to have zero impact.
Actually YOU put Trump in the White House. He wouldn't have gotten 1% of the vote if it wasn't for the widespread spiritual and cultural devastation caused by progressive policies. There's no "this country" left with your immigration policies, your "allies" are worthless and even more suicidal than you are and democracy is a sick joke that I hope nobody ever thinks about repeating when the current order collapses. - Darth_Executor striking a conciliatory note in Civics 101

My fear is that we're screwed no matter what. Obama gave politicians the reigns to our healthcare, and they seem to have a very hard time letting go.

        they suck.

The only good thing I liked about Obamacare was the forcing insurance companies to accept people with pre-existing conditions without penalizing them. Of course the Republicans had to change that. dumbasses.

Well I'm not so cynical - a week ago it was dead in the house.

according to that article they are going to be charging older americans 5 times more on the premiums from young people too. That sounds stupid also. We need to charge the young folks more and then put them on DNR when they end up in the hospital so we can harvest their organs to keep us alive longer.

Under Obama care it was 3 times higher.

I know. The Republicans are supposed to fix AFFORDABLE health care, not make it worse.

Not exactly, there will be high risk pools funded by the Government, if the States don't keep that mandate - which they can.

This is actually only going back to the insurance norm before Obama care.

Here's an idea: If the government didn't tax us so dang much when we're young then we wouldn't need government subsidies to make ends meet when we're old!

Yeah, pretty much. McConnell has said he'll wait for the CBO to score the bill before holding a vote on it. When the CBO says it's terrible and expensive they'll kill the bill. It'll also give people time to read it, as quite a number of Republicans in the house hadn't read the bill when they voted.

I'm kind of confused at the people in this forum who want to see these Republican healthcare-destroying bills pass. Do you just get joy out of having sick people die and having people with pre-existing conditions not covered? Do you just have ideological objections to the government being involved in healthcare and are happy with people dying on the streets if that's what it takes to fulfill your ideological objective of getting rid of the 'Big Gubernment'? Did the right-wing propaganda outlets successfully brainwash you into believing that Obamacare made things worse than what they were previously? Are you credulous and gullible and just have the naive belief that the Republican congress has your best interests at heart as opposed to the super-rich and their donors, and you really believe they will do the right thing for you?

Not sure which of those is causing the "Yusss! Republicans are passing a terrible bill to destroy healthcare for Americans, isn't it great?" vibe you guys have going. Probably a combination of them.

People think I'm being cynical but what alternative did Ryan and McConnell produce in 8 years of complaining?

Yeah, they've got nothing. As I explained here Obamacare was the historical Republican plan of the Nixon / Bush Snr / Heritage Foundation. So when the Dems moved to the right and occupied the part of the political spectrum that the Republicans used to occupy (through a controversial and deliberate process of Triangulation under Bill Clinton) and took up the old Republican healthcare plan, Republicans had nowhere to go... they just ran further to the right on the political spectrum to get away from the Dems, and like Wile E. Coyote they ran off the edge of the cliff without noticing and now are feeling around with their feet and realizing there's actually no ground underneath them.

We don't have a two party system.
I sort of agree and sort of disagree. I'd be the first to criticize the Dems, for all kinds of corruption and a list of bad things as long as your arm. But I think they are an order of magnitude better than the Republicans. There are still quite big differences between the two parties. The Dems will sell out a bit on the side while doing generally good things for middle-class America. The Republicans just act as puppets for their donors, and the think-tanks of their donors will literally hand them a 600-page bill to allow Wall St to screw everyone over and the Republicans will say "thank you sir, can I have another?" You can see the biggest differences between the parties when you look at what sorts of votes consistently die down party lines. In anti-corruption votes, the Dems are always 100% for the measures and the Republicans are always 100% against.
