  • 7 Dead, 20+ injured In German Mass Church Shooting

No real details on the shooter, but at least 6 are dead (7th may be the shooter, it isn't clear). and many more injured in Hamburg Germany after a shooting at a Jehovah's Witness church

A number of people have been killed in a shooting at a Jehovah's Witness meeting hall in the north German city of Hamburg.

Police say a gunman is believed to be dead. It is unclear if the attacker is among six or seven fatalities reported by German media.

As yet, "there is no reliable information on the motive", police say.

A number of people were also injured in the shooting on Deelböge street in the city's Gross Borstel district.

Police say they found a dead person at the scene who they believe may have been a perpetrator and investigations are continuing.

Police were called around 21:15 (20:15 GMT) to reports that shots had been fired in the building, police spokesman Holger Vehren said.

Officers who went in found people who "may have been seriously injured by firearms, some of them fatally", he said.

"The officers also heard a shot from the upper part of the building and went upstairs, where they also found a person. So far we have no indications that any perpetrators fled."

He said police had not yet identified the victims and work at the crime scene continued.

"All we know is that several people have died here, several people have been injured, they have been taken to hospitals," Mr Vehren said.

The reasons behind the shooting were "still completely unclear".

An alert was sent on the federal warning app, NINAwarn, at around 21:00 (20:00 GMT) telling locals that "one or more unknown perpetrators shot at people in a church".

Residents nearby were told not to leave their homes amid the ongoing police operation.

Footage showed police escorting people out of the meeting hall, some to ambulances.

Hamburg's Interior Minister, Andy Grote, said on Twitter that police special forces and a large number of officers had been deployed to the scene.

Police have appealed to the public not to share assumptions or to spread rumours.

Jehovah's Witnesses are members of a Christian-based religious movement.

The denomination was founded in the USA towards the end of the 19th century, under the leadership of Charles Taze Russell. The headquarters of the movement is in New York.

At least seven people have been killed and dozens were injured after a shooting at a Jehovah’s Witness centre in the northern German city of Hamburg, local media have reported, citing police and emergency services.

Police said on Thursday evening that the gunman was believed to be among the dead, and that a motive was as yet unclear.

“We have no indications of a perpetrator on the run,” a spokesperson said soon after the attack. Later, police said that they had found a “lifeless person … who we believe could be a perpetrator”. Investigations were ongoing to rule out the involvement of any other people, police said.

Seven people had died and 25 were injured – eight of them seriously – in the shooting, Bild newspaper reported, which it said began at the Jehovah’s Witness centre soon after 9pm.

As news of the shooting emerged, Hamburg police said that a major police operation was underway in the GrossBorstel district of the city. Several streets were sealed off and the public warned by text message to avoid the area. Local residents were told to stay indoors and only to use their phones “in extreme emergency” so as not to overburden the network.

“According to initial findings, shots were fired in a church on Deelbögestrasse in the GrossBorstel district,” police said. “Several people were seriously injured, some fatally. We are on site with a large contingent of officers.”

By chance, police from a specialised armed unit were already near the scene when the shooting happened, local media reported. “Police officers happened to be near the crime scene because they were on their way back to their accommodation at the police headquarters in Alsterdorf,” Welt reported.

NDR reporter Heiko Sander told Tagesschau that the police nearby acted after hearing several shots being fired. Police entered the building and started evacuating people, including a woman who was pregnant, Sander said.

Later, police said that when officers arrived at the scene they found several people seriously injured and some dead. “Then they heard a shot from above, they went upstairs and found one further person,” the spokesperson said.

An unnamed witness told Reuters he had heard shots fired. “There were 12 continuous shots ... then we saw how people were taken away in black bags,” he told local media.

The city’s police warned against speculation about the shooting. “So far, there is no reliable information on the motive of the crime,” the police spokesperson said. “We ask that you do not share unwarranted assumptions and/or spread rumours.”

Some 175,000 people in Germany are Jehovah’s Witnesses, including 3,800 in Hamburg. The Christian movement set up in the US in the late 19th century preaches non-violence and is known for door-to-door evangelism.

The mayor of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher, said: “I extend my deepest sympathy to the families of the victims. Police are working at full speed to pursue the perpetrators and clarify the background.”

Germany has been rocked by several mass shootings in recent years.

In February 2020 a far-right extremist shot dead 10 people and wounded five others in the central German city of Hanau.

And in 2019, two people were killed after a neo-Nazi tried to storm a synagogue in Halle on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.

It's called a "Kingdom Hall". If this was a synagogue, the motive would have have been speculated, but since people aren't really told that the JWs also suffered in the Holocaust, few would make the connection.

To me, first this shows the US's propensity for mass-shootings is being exported to the world.

Second, I think we need to face up to we are living in a world that is growing increasingly violent at both the government and individual levels.

Germany has had a problem with mass shootings for a few decades now (although not nearly as often as in the U.S.), so there is no reason to theorize some sort of outside cause or influence.

JWs weren't singled out because of their race, but because they refused to support the war effort. Other groups were persecuted too; connecting this to Neo-Nazis seems a bit of a stretch.
