Former President Donald Trump topped the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) straw poll for the 2024 GOP nomination by a wide margin at the conservative conference Saturday.

Trump won 62% support in the poll, which was announced shortly before he was scheduled to speak to the crowd gathered at the Gaylord in Fort Washington, Maryland.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis came in as second choice with 20% support. The third-place pick at 5% support was long-shot GOP candidate Perry Johnson, a businessman who attempted to run for governor in Michigan but was blocked from participating in the Republican primary.

Kari Lake, the Republican Arizona gubernatorial nominee in 2022, received the most support for vice presidential candidate with 20%. DeSantis received 14% support for the 2024 vice presidential nominee in the CPAC poll. Over 2,000 attendees completed the poll, organizers said.

Trump easily won the 2024 GOP presidential nomination straw polls at major CPAC gatherings in Orlando, Florida and Dallas, Texas last year. The former president, who launched his 2024 bid last November and who remains the most popular and influential politician in the GOP more than two years after leaving the White House, captured 69% of ballots cast in the anonymous online straw poll last August in Dallas and 59% in Orlando last February.

The former president’s strong performances in CPAC’s unscientific survey comes as no surprise. The conference, long the largest and most influential gathering of conservative leaders and activists, has become a Trumpfest since his 2016 presidential election victory.

DeSantis was a distant second in the Dallas straw poll, at 24%, and grabbed 28% support in Orlando. Everyone else in the actual and potential field of 2024 GOP presidential candidates were in the low single digits or failed to crack one percent.

Florida's governor, a former congressman, saw his popularity soar among conservatives across the country the past three years due to his forceful pushback against coronavirus pandemic restrictions and his aggressive actions as a conservative culture warrior going after media, corporations and teachers’ unions.

Yes. I've been seeing all week that CPAC was very weak and diminished this year. So, let's hold up this straw poll as ofits representative of conservatives as a whole.

CPAC is nothing like what it was. Now it is nothing more than an organ for Trump, which is why more and more folks are opting out of it.

Well a major reason for the low attendance this year is the credible sexual assault allegations against organizer Matt Schlapp.

One person who was still happy to be on stage with Schlapp though, was Jim Jordan, who's famous for ignoring sexual assault allegations. When Jordan was a coach, 8 kids reported to him that they were being sexually abused by the doctor, and Jordan ignored it, but apparently told the doctor, who had an office next to Jordan, he'd kill him if he tried anything with Jordan himself. The doctor went on to abuse more than 100 kids. It's not surprising that sexual-assault-enabler Jim Jordan is fine being on stage with sexual-assault-accused Matt Schlapp.

There seems to be no bottom to the conservative barrel. It's evil all the way down.

DeSantis and Haley did not opt out. Trump will likely make the cut, but the CPAC performance indicates he still has wide support in the Republican County.

Meanwhile, back on earth, in spite of your declaration, DeSantis did not attend CPAC.

Haley did attend. Got a tepid response and apparently got chased into an elevator after taking a veiled shot at Trump.

Those attending picked Kari Lake as their choice for Trump's VP candidate. I don't expect CPAC to be around in a couple more years.

Aside from being a neocon warmonger, what the heck is her platform? I just don't see anything there. She said it's time for "new faces" in DC. What the heck is that even supposed to mean? Especially as she is an old face.

                    • Patrick Wojahn, a close friend of Pete Buttigieg -- who mentored him when he became mayor of College Park, Maryland (just outside of Washington D.C.) -- has been arrested on 56 counts of possession and distribution of child pornography.

                      Buttigieg and Wojahn

The WaPo describes it this way (all in an article that somehow manages to forget mentioning that he's a Democrat or closeness to old Joe's Transportation Secretary in the 25 paragraph long story)

Authorities have accused Wojahn of uploading and sharing dozens of videos to the social media app Kik in early January that depicted explicit sexual acts involving prepubescent boys and adult men. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children flagged the suspicious Kik account to the Prince George’s County police on Feb. 17, authorities said, and investigators obtained a warrant to search Wojahn’s College Park home on Feb. 28. During that search, police said in court documents, Wojahn waived his Miranda rights and told investigators that the Kik account was his. Police also said that Wojahn “advised that he has viewed and possessed files depicting child pornography,” according to court papers.

There is no truth to the rumor that old Joe has asked Wojahn to replace Sam Brinton at the Energy Department.
