  • Should We Ban TikTok?

    Yes, no?

Lawmakers unveil bipartisan bill that aims to ban TikTok in the U.S.

A new bill from a bipartisan group of lawmakers, if passed, would ban TikTok in the U.S. after years of broad concern across the Trump and Biden administrations about potential Chinese government influence on the company.

I don't like the precedent of government stepping in to ban individual private businesses. (I understand that the wording doesn't specifically say TikTok, but the intent is clear.) Today TikTok, tomorrow it's a Christian owned company.

If they must go after a specific website, why not PornHub instead?

We can't ban TikTok. They aren't even a member of theoloGYweb!

I say yes. Look at how many Tik Tok challenges result in personal harm or theft. We had one person here steal 5 cars from the steal a car challenge.

A little more conspiratorial, I think China is using Tik Tok to sow confusion and dissent in the US. I'll bet a lot of these challenges originated from a Chinese CCP member in China. You'll never find the OP. Also, I don't trust the company's statement that they aren't harvesting our data for future use.

I get KingsGambit concern about Christian companies. I think even without this precedent, they'll eventually come after Christian websites under some form of hate speech violation.

Using that logic, we should just ban the whole Internet because you could plan such a challenge on any website. The purpose of TikTok isn't to create challenges; these could be done on any social networking site or email.

Is it private? Doesn't anything based or launched in China belong (all or part) to that government?

We didn't ban Instagram, FB, or Twitter for the countless 'challenges' that occurred on them before TikTok even existed, why the hell would we ban TikTok for that? That's an incredibly poor argument.

As to your conspiratorial bit, by that logic we should ban any social media site because other countries use them to sow confusion and dissent in the US (Russia on FB for example).

I read somewhere that installing Tik Tok on your cell phone can open a back door for the "company" to access data on it. Sort of the same bruhaha that Huawei faced.

I don't see any need to ban Tik Tok even is this is true. It's a matter of people being responsible for their actions. The risks need to be revealed, though.

                          Yep.

And to be honest, that's not really any different than the various other big apps out there that collect data that the companies farm and sell (and often give access to their respective governments, as we saw with Twitter).

Most of the "challenges" were satire/parody. The "Tide Pods", the "Nyquil Chicken", and other similar stuff were never intended seriously, and very few if any people actually took them seriously. The fact that people are stupid and are willing to mimic dumb things they see isn't really a good reason to shut a place down. At most they need a disclaimer like many cartoons and other tv shows.

I think TikTok should be shut down because of how it is being used by China to harvest data and divide other countries.

On this one point, if it can be proven that personal information is being stolen (meaning that is was not offered up voluntarily when installing and using the app) then the company is guilty of theft or complicit in it, and legal action can be taken.

The more serious problem is if the Chinese government is behind the theft. If so, just any ordinary bozo would have nothing to worry about. But people with serious skeletons in their closets can be blackmailed by China into performing anti-American activities. That is the bigger concern, IMO.
