  • Congress passes the Sodom and Gomorrah act

The US Congress on Thursday passed landmark legislation to protect same-sex marriage under federal law, and President Joe Biden has vowed to quickly sign the measure.

The vote in the House of Representatives saw 39 Republicans join a united Democratic majority in a rare show of bipartisanship, provoking loud cheers on the floor less than 10 days after the Senate passed the same bill.

“Today, Congress took a critical step to ensure that Americans have the right to marry the person they love,” Biden said in a statement.

He said the bipartisan vote would “give peace of mind to millions of LGBTQI+ and interracial couples who are now guaranteed the rights and protections to which they and their children are entitled.”

The conservative-led Supreme Court in June overturned longstanding abortion rights, prompting lawmakers of both parties to move to prevent the court from taking away same-sex marriage rights, as some feared it might do.

The House had earlier approved legislation similar to the Senate’s, but needed Thursday’s vote to reconcile minor differences.

Biden has dubbed marriage equality one of his legislative priorities and has said he will “promptly and proudly” sign the bill into law.

Democrats and others saluted the historic vote.

“I began my career fighting for LGBTQ communities,” outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tweeted on Thursday, “and now, one of the final bills that I will sign as Speaker will ensure the federal government never again stands in the way of marrying the person you love.”

The new legislation, known as the Respect for Marriage Act, does not require states to legalize same-sex marriage but does require them to recognize a marriage so long as it was valid in the state where it was performed.

I think this is actually judgement as we speak, as in we're already going through it, only it will get a whole lot worse. I mean, a man is giving sex toys to children and teaching them how to use them (grooming) and the school seems to be perfectly fine with it. Canada is going through some stuff too.

Sounds like it's just the Full Faith and Credit Clause, not that the clause was actually applicable in US vs Windsor.

The majority of Republican voters now support same sex marriage. So you guys are increasingly in the minority of the minority.

I'm intrigued by those of you who actually think God would punish countries for this. Do you think God would start with the first countries to pass same sex marriage, and later move onto the others? Or does he punish America first because it's his chosen nation?

Do you think the punishment would be spectacular like Sodom and Gomorrah, or subtler? Or so subtle that no one but astute observers with God given eyes to see would even notice it?

That is how social and cultural changes come about. Western societies are set in proverbial amber.

Less people support Y and so Y becomes less important [e.g. the recent census information on the numbers claiming to be Christian in the UK] Or more people think X should not be a crime or receive social opprobrium when it is not actually causing any social or moral harm and so X becomes legal and acceptable, e.g. SSM with the attendant legal rights of spouses and children.

If two people agree to abide by a legal contract [marriage] and remain monogamous where is the immorality?

Yes, evil often wins, we Christians get that...And so it will be until the return of the King...

Homosexuality, in itself, is immoral. So would be anything that fosters it.

So two people abide by a contract [marriage] live together monogamously, and possibly raise children.

Yet according to you those people are immoral because of their partner choice?

Once again, this "morality" of yours echoes the "morality" of those who [at least up until 2013] were still opposed mixed race marriages.

Railing fervently against the “hybreeds” spawned by God-defying, racially mixed marriages, Pastor Donny Reagan of Tennessee’s Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ doesn’t look very happy on a widely circulated Internet video that comes across like a relic from some 1950s archive.

The pastor minces no words in his sermon: “What white woman would want her baby to be a mulatto by a colored man?” As for the black man who has children with a white woman: “He don’t want them to look like him, so he’ll marry with another.” Lest this sound racist, Reagan adds helpfully, “Some of the finest people I ever met in my life was some of them colored people.”

But this sermon isn’t from the bad old times; it was recorded just last year in Reagan’s 600-member Johnson City, Tenn., church. What’s more, the pastor is not unique in translating the theology of William Branham, a breakaway Pentecostal religious leader, into a “no-exceptions” Biblical ban on interracial marriage. Branham-based churches are scattered across the U.S. They may not all embrace the racial separation extolled by Reagan, but the Branham theology invites racism, says James Walker, president of The Watchman Fellowship, an Arlington, Texas, evangelical ministry that researches cults and new religious movements.

I'm still waiting for all the liberals to move to Canada like they promised after Bush and Trump were elected.

The Bible does not condemn mixed race marriages, but it does unambiguously condemn homosexuality.

What is this new law supposed to provide, exactly? How will things be different now with gay marriages?

In the text of the SCOTUS ruling that said abortion was no longer a constitutionally-guaranteed right, was a statement of intent do the same for same sex marriage.

So congress is taking action to preempt that by passing this federal law affirming same sex marriage is a federal right. So it is now both a constitutional right, and a federal right.

As a result, even if SCOTUS goes ahead with their threat to declare same sex marriage no longer a constitutional right, people will still have the federal right to same sex marriage.

How will things be different now with gay marriages?
                            There will be zero difference.

This is just putting in place a backup, to stop the current far-right activist judges on SCOTUS from getting rid of same sex marriage.

The Supreme Court could still overturn a federal law though. I don't see how passing this new gay marriage law will afford any protection.
