American Girl describes their purpose on their website as

Bringing out the joy of girlhood is at the heart of everything we do. Through adventurous stories and imaginative play, we give girls the chance to discover who they are—and who they’re meant to be.

Each year parents pump millions of dollars into buying dolls and accessories for their young daughters to play with, so maybe they should take a look at what their money is supporting.

The company recently published a book called Body Image: How to love yourself, live to the fullest and celebrate all kinds of bodies, which pushes gender transition (so much for "bringing out the joy of girlhood") targeted at girls between 3 and 12[1] -- even offering advice on how to do so behind their parent's back.

Also called "A Smart Girl’s Guide: Body Image"

The book recommends that girls take puberty blockers until they can decide which gender they are and even says

"If you don’t have an adult you trust, there are organizations across the country that can help you. Turn to the resources on page 95 for more information."

Meanwhile the same book recommends talking to your parents first before deciding to shave your arm pits.

"Removing hair is a very personal choice and you should only do it if it feels right for your body (and after talking to a parent)"

Wanna shave your pits? Talk to your parents.

Wanna take puberty blockers? Here are ways to do so without telling your parents.

    As one critic observed,

This is not how to love yourself or “live to the fullest,” but how to make contact with strangers who will help you permanently disfigure yourself.

The message that a girl can be born into the wrong body and therefore requires surgery and drugs in order to "be herself" flies directly in the face of their message of body acceptance.

So much for the oft repeated dismissive claim that nobody is trying to indoctrinate young children. This is not something being marketed to teens.

Shall we all hold our collective breaths waiting for the NYT or WaPo's coverage? Maybe if there is a big enough stink.

    1. One source said it was being marketed toward 8 to 11 year olds -- still prepubescent girls being told to seek puberty blockers from their doctors if they experience any discomfort with their bodies (and being informed how to do so in secret).

FWIU, American Girl has enjoyed a good reputation for some time. Now, parents (and grandparents) can no longer depend on a brand they had trusted.

I'm not one to call for boycotts and the like but this is something people need to be aware of.

          Worse than the Disney betrayal.

            Oh boy.

My girls were all into American Girl dolls and books (the books were actually really good, at least the original ones - lots of history, lessons, etc.).

Soooooo glad they've grown beyond those now if this is what the company has become. Just wow

A lot of young women grew up on those dolls and books and will have to be a bit sickened when they discover that passing on that tradition to their daughters might not be the smartest thing.

When even TMZ is a bit shocked...

I've noticed how AG is now saying the book is for children 10 and up while it doesn't appear to have been initially marketed that way.

Source: AMERICAN GIRLDOUBLES DOWN ON KID BOOK ABOUT GENDER TRANSITION... Despite Backlash

The American Girl doll brand is standing its ground after getting a ton of backlash for a book that encourages young girls to explore their identity, and offers info about transitioning.

The company tells TMZ, "We value the views and feedback of our customers and acknowledge the perspectives on this issue. The content in this book, geared for kids 10+, was developed in partnership with medical and adolescent care professionals and consistently emphasizes the importance of having conversations and discussing any feelings with parents or trusted adults."

AG continues, "We are committed to delivering content that leaves our readers feeling informed, confident, and positive about themselves."

The franchise is known for promoting self-esteem among young girls, but it had a lot of folks up in arms for selling its book, "A Smart Girl's Guide: Body Image Book". Some social media users accused the company of promoting puberty blockers to children ... and convincing them they're born the wrong way.

One of the specific sections that got a lot of pushback reads, "If you haven't gone through puberty yet, the doctor might offer medicine to delay your body's changes, giving you more time to think about your gender identity."

However AG seems to be ignoring all the critics and maintaining its stance that it's all about girls loving themselves and celebrating their bodies, however they want them to look.
