You are actually right for half a sentence here, unusually for you. And just as unusually I am wrong, so an error correction is worthwhile. I swear I checked before posting my post and saw a source that said the doxxing was later, but on rechecking it was indeed earlier than I had thought.

You do drive into a ditch as per usual though when you say it happened before Elon even thought of buying Twitter. The 'doxxing', referring to the naming of the person behind libs of tik tok, seems to have been April 19th 2022. Musk had publicly offered to buy Twitter the previous week, April 14th 2022, an offer than was subsequently accepted. Elon had been buying up Twitter shares for the previous 4 months.

My being wrong on the timeline regarding when Elon Musk made the offer and doxxing of Libs of Tik Tok does not excuse you from being wrong about the kind of special treatment you imply those in charge of Twitter before Elon Musk gave Libs of Tik Tok.

Huh? Libs of Tik Tok had a behind the scenes setting preventing lower level mods taking action on the account. We know this from screen shots Taibbi showed. That's special treatment.

On the other topic of us both being wrong about the doxxing timeline, I might have been wrong actually about the fact that I was wrong... it looks like there might have been two different incidents, one as Musk was making his offer to purchase the company and one after he was in charge. I need to look into this a bit more but don't have the time currently.

There's a few ways to look at that.

          1. They were already on at least 1 shadow ban list. "taking action" also includes removing them from lists, meaning that "lower level mods" couldn't do anything positive (i.e. promote, un-shadowban, etc) to the account. Which is special treatment, just not the kind you are talking about.

          2. They had been repeatedly banned, there were threats of a lawsuit, and a legal fund for Libs of TikTok. The "special treatment" may have been less RW bias and more CYA protection.

          3. They were listed as 'high profile', would be interesting to see if MORE 'high profile' flags had similar markings.

Though, in all fairness, here is the picture. You can tell from the picture that it was taken on 12-7-2022 or after (from the last access/last tweet parts of the screen). This means that, theoretically EVERY flag on that account, including the 'special access' COULD HAVE been placed there very recently, as recently as 1-2 days prior to this story coming out.

            "Special treatment" is right.

Lower level mods were told to back off because it was being handled at a higher level. Given that they were suspended on five separate occasions, warned that their account could be permanently banned and on the last suspension Twitter didn't even bother indicating what they did wrong, that "special treatment" was anything but favorable.

WaPo didn't list her address, what they doxxed was her name which she wanted to keep secret. Hence various articles about was this actually 'doxxing' / what does that word actually mean these days / are you 'doxxed' if you feel doxxed?

People much later publishing her address, and that being allowed to stay up, thus constitutes the actual doxxing, or a 2nd instance of doxxing, depending on how you want to interpret it.

Complaining about a linguistic shift of "doxxing" is hilarious given the linguistic shifts regarding "wo/man".

That's what Adam said when he saw Eve for the first time (remember, she was nekked) .... "Woah!!!! MAN!!!!!!" and, henceforth and thereafter, she was called "woman".

I don't complain about linguistic shifts in general and usually I'm the the one mocking people for getting too upset about linguistic change. In this instance the reason for talking about it is that the linguistic change was the source of confusion, cos both Rogue and myself had assumed that doxxing=address disclosure, but in this case name disclosure ('doxxing'?) and address disclosure were two separate events, which caused timeline issues/ambiguities/errors when discussing when this person was 'doxxed'.

Interestingly I saw recently that another person of the same name in the US has been getting mistakenly thought by people to be the libs of tiktok person, so clearly the doxxing wasn't clear enough if people are still targeting the wrong person!

I was referring more to the Atlantic article that you sources. My apologies for the confusion.

But it makes a good case how dangerous doxxing can be. Innocent people can be attacked, and this isn't all that rare. Even 50 years ago, I arrested a man who raped and murdered a 9 year old girl, and somebody revealed his name to the media before it was officially released. A friend of mine with the same first and last name started receiving death threats, and trash dumped on his front lawn. I think this is something we should all agree is wrong and dangerous.

The "quasi-doxxing" done by the WaPo was in this respect worse than a full doxxing of the owner of Libs of TikTok in that those with the same or similar name who had nothing to do with it get targeted.

                            • I think that if Elon Musk says you can't reveal personal information about someone on twitter, even if that information is available somewhere else, that is his business and probably a good rule. We have the same rule here on tweb. You can't reveal any member's real name or personal information without their permission, even if that information is available elsewhere.
